The Joy of Growing Up with Cousins: A Doctor’s Perspective

When my brother and his partner visited one chilly evening to share their exciting news about expecting a child, I couldn’t contain my excitement. While I was eager to welcome their new arrival and thrilled for my brother, what truly delighted me was the prospect of my kids—aged 7 months and 2 years at the time—growing up alongside their cousins. This was a joy I never had myself.

Fast forward nine years, and our family has expanded to include seven children among my siblings and me. Witnessing this journey has brought immense joy and countless benefits to all of us. Here are some key advantages that come with growing up with cousins:

  1. Strengthened Family Ties

Beyond just family gatherings where our children play together, these moments allow my siblings and I to connect on a deeper level. We share stories about childbirth, parenting challenges, and the ups and downs of motherhood. My sisters provide honest feedback when I seek advice, and we support one another during tough times. Our meet-ups often involve indulging in too much food and not enough drinks, and we relish our time together until we’re ready to return to our little ones.

  2. Sleepover Fun

Sleepovers are a source of joy for my kids, and I have the comfort of knowing they are in a secure environment. I don’t have to bombard my sisters with texts to check in, as they regularly send updates and photos throughout the night. Plus, they’re direct about when it’s time for me to come collect my child.

  3. An Unbreakable Bond

Since they’ve grown up together, the bond between my kids and their cousins is incredibly strong. They share a connection that goes beyond mere friendship. My daughter, who doesn’t have a sister, finds her best friend in her cousin. They’ve even made plans to be each other’s maid of honor one day and have created their own secret language.

  4. A Support Network

If anyone dares to bother one cousin, they’ll quickly learn that they have to face the whole crew. This united front ensures that everyone stands up for each other, especially when it comes to defending the younger ones.

  5. Shared Experiences

As they grow older, they’ll inevitably encounter family dynamics that aren’t always perfect. However, they will have each other to confide in and share their thoughts about family quirks and challenges. There’s a unique comfort in knowing that someone else understands their experiences.

While I don’t wish to rush their childhood, I eagerly await the day when they reflect on their shared upbringing. I believe their answer will be that it meant the world to them.
