No matter how many times you fold laundry, it seems there’s always more waiting for your attention. Regardless of how swiftly you tackle the mountain of dirty dishes, new ones appear as if by magic. Even after poring over countless parenting books and articles, you might still find yourself doubting whether you’re making the right choices for your kids.
Despite waking up early to set the day in motion, one of your little ones’ internal alarm clocks often seems to go off just as soon as you rise. And even if you burn the midnight oil to finish your tasks while the house sleeps, the hours never feel sufficient to catch up.
While you might encourage your children not to compare themselves to others, you may catch yourself measuring your parenting skills against those of seemingly “perfect” mothers. No matter how often you tidy up the toys and clutter, they mysteriously reappear in the most inconvenient places. And although you strive to please everyone in your family, it’s a safe bet that not everyone will be content with you at the same time.
Motherhood can feel like an uphill battle; it’s chaotic and draining, yet one of the most humbling roles you can undertake. We pour our energy into our families, often placing our needs last. Yet, in those moments of feeling like we’ve fallen short, it’s crucial to remember that we’re doing our best.
Today, for instance, I spent hours in the sun with my three children, running barefoot through the yard. If you’d seen us, you might have thought we hadn’t bathed in days—a true sign of a delightful day, wouldn’t you say? As I relaxed on the pavement, my youngest snuggled into my lap, and I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of our grass-stained feet. Her painted toenails, a testament to her creativity, reminded me of the comfort and safety my lap represents for my children.
She looked up at me, grinned, and whispered, “You’re my best friend in the whole wide world.” In that fleeting moment, a wave of reassurance washed over me. Perhaps it took those grass-streaked feet to remind me, but I realized I’m doing something right after all.
