20 Realities of Parenting Three Kids

After my partner and I had our first two children, we believed our family was complete. However, when our youngest turned three and we had just celebrated the end of diaper duty—surprise!—I was expecting again! Now, I can’t imagine our lives without all three of them. However, having three children does introduce a distinct family dynamic and unique challenges. Here’s a glimpse into that experience:

  1. More Kids than Hands
If your children are close in age, this becomes particularly evident. You quickly master the art of utilizing your knees, elbows, and even your chin to juggle daily tasks.
  2. Outnumbered
In the words of a famous reality star, one child is manageable, two feels like a crowd, and three? Well, that’s a whole different ball game. Unless you’re in a polygamous arrangement, the adults will always be outnumbered, leaving you to ponder how you didn’t foresee this before the third child arrived. The oldest should step up to help when they are able.
  3. Changing Perspectives on Age
When your firstborn was four, they seemed so mature, but by the time your third reaches that age, they may still seem like a toddler. You tend to hold your first child to higher behavioral and academic standards compared to your youngest. (Sorry to the firstborns!)
  4. Middle Child Syndrome
The first child relishes their trailblazing status, while the youngest enjoys being pampered. Unfortunately, the middle child often feels overlooked. Perhaps that’s why many middle children develop unique creativity—just a theory!
  5. Increased Stress Levels
Research shows that parents of three experience more stress than those with fewer children. The balancing act of trying to do everything well can leave you feeling perpetually overwhelmed without the option to let things slide.
  6. The Need for Larger Vehicles
If you plan to transport anyone beyond your immediate family, a minivan or large SUV becomes essential. With multiple car seats, fitting everyone in can quickly become a logistical challenge.
  7. Exponential Growth in Parenting Demands
If two children double the workload, three seem to multiply it by four. You often marvel at how families with even more children manage the chaos.
  8. Sleep Becomes a Myth
The concept of sleeping through the night fades away by the time your third child arrives. Each age group brings its own sleep disturbances, morphing your nights into a cycle of sleeplessness.
  9. Financial Drain
Starting a college fund for your first child feels manageable, but by the time the third comes along, you’re preparing for a full-ride scholarship. Extracurricular activities and grocery bills can feel overwhelming.
  10. Skyrocketing Travel Costs
Planning a family vacation? The cost of flights for five can be staggering. A budget flight suddenly turns into a significant expense, making road trips the preferred choice.
  11. Hotel Room Challenges
While four people fit comfortably in most hotel rooms, accommodating five often requires creative solutions—extra beds, rollaways, or even sleeping bags to avoid uncomfortable arrangements.
  12. Feelings of Exclusion
With an odd number of kids, it’s inevitable that someone will be left out, whether during games or at family outings. Splitting treats can feel like a diplomatic crisis!
  13. Family Movie Night Dilemmas
Finding a movie that pleases everyone is tricky, especially with varying ages and interests. You might find yourself repeatedly watching the same film simply because it’s the only one that suits all tastes.
  14. Game Night Frustrations
Though the idea of family game night sounds fun, having to cater to different age levels can turn it into a chore. After years of the same games, the excitement can fade away quickly.
  15. A Day Without One Child Feels Like a Break
With one child away, the workload diminishes significantly. Suddenly, managing two seems like a piece of cake, altering your perspective on parenting dynamics.
  16. Baby Books in Disarray
Your first child’s baby book is a beautifully curated collection, while the third’s memories are scattered across your computer. Life gets busy, and documentation often slips through the cracks.
  17. Bedtime Becomes a Marathon
With three kids at different ages, bedtime can drag on for hours, leaving you questioning how this became your routine.
  18. The Need for Silence
At times, you simply have to declare a moment of silence. “No talking for the next 15 minutes, or there will be consequences!” It’s a real struggle!
  19. Recognizing Individuality
While the differences between your children may become evident with the second child, the third truly highlights how unique each child can be. Nature plays a significant role, regardless of your parenting style.
  20. Expanding Capacity for Love
No matter your current family size, you realize that your love grows with each child. If a fourth child were to come unexpectedly, you’d embrace them wholeheartedly, knowing that love is boundless.

Although our journey to a family of three wasn’t by design, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Life with three kids can be chaotic and demanding, yet it is also filled with love and joy. Our family of five feels complete and just right.
