Recently, I’ve found myself in several tricky situations regarding my children’s behavior, and I’m sure many parents can relate. One instance involved my child getting hurt by another child, who accidentally threw a rock. Should I step in? The child meant no harm, but I hesitated to say anything.
In another case, I learned about a teenager—a friend’s child—engaging in risky and unlawful behavior. It’s concerning, and if it were my child, I would want to be informed. This dilemma is common among parents: to speak up or remain silent?
Let me be clear: If my child throws a rock and injures yours, I want to hear about it—accident or not. If my child speaks disrespectfully to you, I want to know. If there are concerns about drug use or inappropriate behavior, please inform me.
If you see my child in places they shouldn’t be or hear rumors about their choices, such as partying too hard or lying to me, I want you to communicate that. Whether it’s bullying or just being generally difficult, I would appreciate the heads-up.
If you know my child is involved in relationships that raise red flags—like dating someone much older, or associating with individuals who have a criminal background—I need to be aware. If you notice my child engaging in activities on the computer that you wouldn’t approve of for your own, it’s crucial that you let me know.
And while we’re at it, if you notice I have an embarrassing issue, like a wardrobe malfunction or visible makeup mishap, please speak up.
If there’s something concerning my child that doesn’t fall into these categories, I’d much rather you share it with me than keep it to yourself. And if you’re unsure how to approach me, you could start with, “Remember when you said you wanted to be told if your kid was acting up? Well…”
