Dear Felix,
As you approach your sixth birthday, I find myself wanting to pause time and hold onto the essence of my Gentle Spirit. Your innate kindness and sensitivity are sometimes mistaken for weakness among boys. Your ability to empathize and your tears, which flow freely, are often unfairly labeled as “feminine.” Please remember, my dear, that these traits are a strength, not a flaw.
There are so many lessons I want to share with you about how to treat girls. If I could have one wish, it would be for you to see every girl in your life with the same respect and admiration that you show me. I cherish the way you view the world, filled with optimism and hope. As you grow, I hope you will always approach a girl first with your heart, and then with your eyes. See her for who she truly is—her intellect, her emotions, and her spirit. Respect her autonomy; she has control over her own body.
Be brave in standing up to those who objectify girls. Show your peers that boys can be nurturing and compassionate. Teach them that girls are equals in every aspect. Encourage the girls around you to ignore the negativity and embrace the positivity in their lives. Use your remarkable ability to connect with others as a catalyst for change among your friends. Always hold dear the wisdom your father has shared about treating girls with equality. He is an example of a boy who stands up for what is right.
Being a sensitive boy can be challenging. Don’t let the majority dictate who you are. You possess a unique strength that shines from within that gentle heart of yours. Lead by example and inspire others to be their best selves.
You are resilient, kind, humorous, and gentle. There is space in your life for all of these qualities. Whenever you find yourself questioning your worth, remember what Molly Lou Melon’s grandmother once said: “Smile big and the world will smile right alongside of you.”
With all my love,
Mom
