In a recent report by Tom Anderson from the Morning Show, police were seen monitoring vehicle speeds in a school zone. Some drivers were clocked at a staggering 56 MPH—right in front of a school! They set up a speed trap, and within minutes, they caught a driver—a woman speeding by at 53 MPH. When questioned about her speed, she confidently stated, “I’d say around 30 or 35.” Really? There’s a speedometer staring you in the face; there’s no excuse for being oblivious to how fast you’re driving.
Anderson pressed the officer on whether driving 50 MPH would allow a driver enough time to stop for a child. The officer firmly replied, “No. Definitely not.” He then asked the speeding driver why she was going so fast. Her response? “I didn’t think I was. You just go with the flow of traffic.” Nope! You don’t need to “think” about it; your speedometer is right in front of you.
Sure, the speed limit in school zones is slow—often just 15 MPH around my child’s school. But there’s a good reason for that: a child’s life is far more precious than a few minutes saved by someone rushing out the door. This behavior is simply unacceptable. You cannot endanger a child’s life because you believe traffic laws don’t apply to you—they absolutely do, especially when it comes to protecting lives.
This infuriates me. When you’re behind the wheel, you’re controlling a dangerous machine—a several thousand-pound vehicle that can easily take lives if you’re not cautious. There’s no justification for such negligence.
Just moments after the first stop, the officer caught another speeder, this time going 52 MPH. When asked about her speed, she sheepishly said, “I guess I’m in a hurry.”
According to the Federal Highway Administration, if a car hits a pedestrian at 40 MPH or higher, there’s an 80% chance that pedestrian won’t survive. But drop that speed to 20 MPH and less than 10% will die. Keep this in mind the next time you find yourself in a rush around a school zone. No appointment or errand is worth risking a child’s life.
