Dear Parents,

It’s that exciting time of year again—back to school! If your little ones haven’t yet swapped their beach toys for backpacks, they will be doing so shortly. We understand the challenges and adventures you’ve faced over the summer, and as your child’s teacher, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome on behalf of all educators preparing to welcome your precious gems into our classrooms this year. So, thank you for entrusting us with their education!

We know that after two and a half months, finishing a cup of coffee while it’s still warm must feel like a victory. We’re happy to step in and remind Timmy that keeping his pants on is essential at school—after all, public spaces have certain expectations (especially in high school English class!). If you find yourself saying this again before the holiday season, I can only imagine how tempting a peaceful retreat somewhere far away might sound, but we’re here to help!

We also fully recognize your state of near desperation with Susie’s latest escapades, like turning the family cat into a strawberry preserve masterpiece. Rest assured, we’ll be there to gently remind her that number two pencils are not meant for ear canals, and rubber cement does not belong in light sockets. This way, you can finally tackle that never-ending to-do list that probably feels like it reaches the moon by now.

And now that you can see your living room floor again—free from the toy tornado that took over in June—we will ensure that Billy learns that snack wrappers and crumpled paper belong in the trash, not on the carpet. Who knows? Maybe this newfound understanding will carry over at home, and you’ll never have to fish used gum out of the bathroom rug again. A teacher can dream, right?

As you re-enter conversations with adults who listen and respond, we’ll gladly endure the “Wait, what are we doing again?” and “What? You didn’t mention we had to do that!” while keeping our composure, even when our minds are screaming. We know that if you have to tell Janie to put her shoes away one more time, you might consider a one-way ticket to Fiji. It may be lovely there, but your family would miss you (and who would cook dinner if you weren’t around?).

Most importantly, we understand that while you cherish your children, you may have contemplated some rather extreme measures regarding summer breaks. We feel your pain and promise to be there to support you as we navigate this school year together. Keep those feelings of summer chaos tucked away for next year when the tables will turn, and you’ll find yourself writing a letter like this one to us.

Remember, when you do, make sure to send it postmarked to Fiji!

Warmly,
Your Teachers
