5 Things I Won’t Miss When My Only Child Heads Off to College

As my daughter packs her bags for college, I find myself caught between nostalgia and excitement. It’s been just the two of us—our own little version of Gilmore Girls—but I can’t help but think of the changes that will come when it’s just me and the dog wandering around the house. Here are five things I won’t miss when she leaves:

1. Dessert for Dinner, Here I Come!

Let’s face it, I’ve often had to hold back my sweet tooth. Ice cream for dinner? Not exactly the role model moment I want to set. I’ve managed to justify the occasional fondue night, complete with healthy dippers like broccoli and apples, but indulging in a turtle brownie doesn’t quite carry the same nutritional weight. Soon, I can relish a sundae whenever I please, guilt-free! Perhaps it’s time for a second freezer to stash all those delightful treats.

2. Tampons in Their Place!

How is it that despite having a stockpile of feminine products that would impress even the most devoted couponer, I still find myself shouting for my daughter to grab me a “stick”? If only they could magically refill themselves! Thanks to her tendency to leave the bathroom without restocking, it’ll be nice to know where everything is without a scavenger hunt through our hallway closet.

3. Netflix Will Finally Understand Me

When it comes to streaming recommendations, let’s just say that Netflix has been a bit off the mark. My tastes lean towards romantic comedies and historical dramas, while my daughter seems to think I’d love a yoga documentary or the surreal world of Twin Peaks. Once she’s off at college, I can finally enjoy my preferred viewing without enduring her cult classic marathons.

4. No More Towel Hide-and-Seek

I adore my daughter, but her towel usage is nothing short of a mystery. With long hair, it’s understandable that drying off takes extra time, but I often find towels scattered all over the house, only to later discover them smelling funky in her laundry basket! With her gone, I can finally keep track of the towels and maybe even enjoy the scent of fresh linens.

5. Coffee Funds = Girls’ Nights Out

As I age, caffeine after noon turns me into a jittery mess. Meanwhile, my daughter can sip coffee morning, noon, and night, leaving me with a budget that could be better spent on dinners out with friends. I’m looking forward to reallocating those coffee funds for some fun nights on the town, especially since I have a knack for finding the best happy hour deals!

While I know I’ll miss my daughter terribly, the list of what I won’t miss isn’t long. I’ll have plenty of time to bond with my Roku while munching on cupcakes on the couch. Plus, I might finally figure out who’s been leaving shoes everywhere and cluttering the kitchen table! And let’s not forget, my daughter will always be just a text away, probably still forgetting to pick up her towel!

Summary:

As my only child prepares to leave for college, I reflect on the things I won’t miss—like hunting for tampons and cleaning up towels. With Netflix recommendations finally tailored to me and the freedom to indulge in dessert for dinner, I’m ready for this new chapter. While I’ll miss my daughter, the adventures of solo living await!
