Let’s face it: I’m probably going to be a total emotional wreck when we drop our oldest off at college this fall. I can already see my family scrambling to devise a plan to pull me away from her dorm room before I turn into a full-on sobbing mess. We’ve experienced so many little milestones already—the final first day of school, the last school dance, college tours, signing acceptance letters—each moment has ended with my daughter looking at me, rolling her eyes, and asking, “Are you about to cry again?” Well, yes, my dear, I can’t help it!
With high school graduation and college move-in day fast approaching, I decided it was time to focus on the positives ahead instead of getting lost in nostalgia (cue the whimper). So, my beloved daughter, while I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunities and experiences that your college education will bring, here are my top five reasons to celebrate your graduation and upcoming adventure:
1. The Great Room Excavation
Getting your room ready for college is going to be the ultimate home project. We’re bound to unearth forgotten treasures! From old pictures and notes to plastic jewelry and worn-out ballerina tutus, we’ll find all sorts of memorabilia. It’s like embarking on an archaeological dig—sure, it requires some effort, but discovering all those memories will be a blast!
2. Care Packages Galore
I can’t explain my obsession with care packages, but I think it’s because I want to make your life a little easier from afar. I can’t be there to prepare your lunch or do your laundry once you’re away, but I can send you little surprises from home. Just the thought of a note or a favorite treat arriving in your dorm can brighten your day—and that makes me smile!
3. Kid No. 2 Gets His Time in the Spotlight
You enjoyed the luxury of being an only child for the first few years, and now it’s your brother’s turn! While you had the undivided attention of your parents, he’s about to relish his own time in the limelight during his high school years. For the record, your teenage brother thinks you had the better deal and is a bit unsure about all this attention being on him for four years.
4. Halfway to an Empty Nest
Your dad and I started our family early, which meant we put our couple time—like traveling and spontaneous date nights—on the back burner. But as you transition to college, we’re edging closer to that empty nest phase. Just remember, nothing gives us more joy than being your parents! By the time your brother is off to college, we’ll be ready to explore new adventures together. And hey, the fact that after 22 years of marriage, your parents still enjoy each other’s company is a solid win!
5. It’s Your Time to Soar
You’re ready to spread your wings and fly! While venturing out on your own can be exhilarating, frightening, and sometimes bumpy, it’s also the most rewarding experience life offers. Just remember—if you ever feel overwhelmed and need a safe space to land, we’ll always be here for you.

In summary, while the thought of my firstborn heading off to college evokes a flood of emotions, I choose to focus on the exciting adventures ahead. This transition is a celebration of growth—not just for her, but for our entire family as we embrace new beginnings.
