10 Thoughts from a Dad on ‘Frozen’

As the father of a spirited 3-year-old daughter, I’ve had the pleasure of watching Frozen more times than I can count. Seriously, it’s likely more than any other movie in my life. You know when you watch something repeatedly, your mind starts to wander? Well, here are some of my musings on this animated classic.

Disclaimer: Spoilers lie ahead, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, maybe just read my first point and then come back later!

1 – It’s unbelievable that some parents haven’t seen this movie

There are actually folks with kids under 10 who have yet to watch Frozen. Mind blown! How can this be? Is it a secret superpower, or are they just savvy enough to avoid the ice-cold grip of its catchy songs? Either way, they’re winning at parenting in a way I can’t even comprehend.

2 – How did Elsa get her powers, anyway?

We understand Spider-Man’s origin story and know Superman’s alien roots. But Elsa? She can shoot ice from her hands, and I’m left wondering—was she born this way? Maybe she was a lab experiment gone wrong. Or was she bitten by a frostbitten spider? I demand a prequel to satisfy my curiosity!

3 – Did I really miss that their parents were shipwrecked?

After watching the movie multiple times, I finally caught onto the fact that Elsa and Anna’s parents were lost at sea. How did I not notice this before? I think I was too busy questioning where their parents were, and that might explain my initial dislike of the film.

4 – The dad’s approach to Elsa is questionable

“Let’s lock her away because she’s different”? Really, Dad? It would’ve been refreshing if he had encouraged her uniqueness instead. Imagine him saying, “Elsa, you’re amazing just the way you are.” That would’ve sent a powerful message about embracing differences. But hey, I guess that would’ve changed the entire plot, right?

5 – I saw through Anna and Hans’ “love at first sight” instantly

Watching “Love Is An Open Door,” I turned to my partner and said, “This won’t end well.” And surprise, surprise, I was right! Maybe I should start my own fortune-telling business!

6 – Please stop with the “Brozen” trend

I can’t stand the idea of guys needing a clever name for enjoying a movie like Frozen. “Brozen”? Really? Just be a dad who enjoys a movie with his kid, without needing a label. It’s like calling stay-at-home dads “Mr. Moms” — just let them be dads!

7 – If I had to pick a character for my daughters to befriend, it’d be Merida from Brave

Sure, Frozen has its charm, but Merida is a total badass! She’s spunky and fierce, and I’d love for my girls to have a friend like her. I mean, who wouldn’t want a friend who can take care of herself and make her own destiny?

8 – Olaf is the real MVP

Seriously, why wasn’t Olaf nominated for an Oscar? He’s the glue that holds the film together! From “I like warm hugs” to his hilarious observations, he’s the sunshine in this icy tale. Without him, the movie would be a lot less fun.

9 – That giant snowman scared my daughter

After that scene where Anna throws a snowball, my little one was utterly terrified! Now, I have to skip that part whenever we watch. Thank goodness we live in a warm climate; I’m not sure how her first snow experience would go after that scare.

10 – The sisterly bond at the end made me all emotional

My girls are just starting to form their sibling bond, and seeing Anna protect Elsa was a beautiful reminder of the love that can exist between sisters. Despite the occasional naysayers who claim that teenage years will ruin it all, I hold onto hope that their love will only grow stronger.

In conclusion, while Frozen may not top my list of animated favorites—Wreck-It Ralph holds that title—it’s undeniable that it has become a classic. It’s fascinating to think our children will one day share this movie with their kids, just like we did with our favorites. Just imagine if they ask to build a snowman and then suggest, “Let’s watch Frozen!”
