Women’s Products: Higher Prices for Less Product

Have you ever noticed how women’s products often come with a steeper price tag, despite offering less? The folks at The Daily Share put together a humorous video highlighting the shocking differences in prices for everyday items like razors, haircuts (regardless of length), skincare products, and even deodorant. Interestingly, when it comes to deodorant, men typically get more for their bucks!

It might sound odd, but a closer inspection reveals that even if the prices look similar, men’s products usually offer a better value per ounce and last longer because the containers are larger. To satisfy my curiosity, I did a little research from the comfort of my couch. I found that Mennen Speed Stick and LADY Speed Stick both retail for $3.99, but the women’s version only contains 2.6 ounces, while the men’s version has 3 ounces. This translates to a per-ounce price that’s 50 cents higher for women, or an extra 25 cents per underarm! It seems like a common trend—men’s products often come in the 3-ounce size while women’s stick to 2.6 ounces. Perhaps they think we can’t handle a heavier container?

While it’s easy to chuckle at a difference of a few cents, these small costs add up over a lifetime. A study from California revealed that women end up paying an average of $1,351 more each year than men for comparable goods and services. This gender price gap also impacted health insurance costs, although the Affordable Care Act has since mandated that insurers eliminate such pricing inequalities.

So, what’s the takeaway? Stay vigilant! If men’s deodorant, shampoo, or shaving cream is identical to women’s products, don’t be swayed by the pink packaging and labels—go for the best price available. And when it comes to haircuts, don’t hesitate to challenge the stylist. If your husband has a hairstyle similar to yours, ask how much his cut is and insist on getting the same price!
