In Defense of Kat von D’s Lipstick, ‘Underage Red’

When I first caught wind of the Twitter frenzy surrounding Kat von D’s lipstick shade named “Underage Red,” my initial reaction was something like, “Why didn’t I think of that first?” Sure, the name is a bit edgy, but honestly, I’m baffled by all the uproar. And yes, I have a 12-year-old daughter! Since Chanel debuted “Vamp” back in ’95 and Nars rolled out the now-iconic “Orgasm” blush, makeup brands have been getting increasingly cheeky with their product names. Just think of MAC’s “Nymphette,” Urban Decay’s “Pussy Galore,” and let’s not forget my personal favorite, Urban Decay’s chocolate brown eye shadow called “Backdoor.” Clever, right?

Kat von D took to Facebook to address the criticism. She explained that “Underage Red” isn’t your typical girly pink or a deep, sophisticated red. Instead, she sees it as a bold declaration of feminine rebellion. She firmly stated, “These wild accusations claiming that my makeup line promotes the degradation of women go against everything I stand for. If you hear ‘underage’ and jump to a disgusting conclusion, maybe it’s time to reflect on your own thoughts. I refuse to compromise my integrity or creative freedom. No, I will not be pulling ‘Underage Red’ from my collection, and this is not an apology.” Kat von D for president, am I right?

While I’d love to swing by Sephora to grab my own tube of nostalgia, it seems I’ll have to wait a bit longer since it’s already sold out. I do wonder if they still carry Stiff Stuff.

In summary, the fuss over “Underage Red” feels a bit overblown. Kat von D is simply embracing creativity and pushing boundaries, which is something that should be celebrated, not criticized.
