5 Insights from Your Child’s Preschool Educator

Before I embraced the adventure of being a stay-at-home mom, I spent years working in various daycare centers, eventually stepping into roles as a manager and owner. While every childcare facility has its own unique vibe, there are some universal truths that all early childhood educators share. Here’s what you should know:

  1. We Truly Care for Your Little Ones
It might surprise you, but we genuinely love your kids as if they were our own (but we’re not trying to take your place, promise!). Despite the common misconception, childcare workers are often underpaid and overworked, yet we show up every day because we adore nurturing young minds. Sure, we might end up with glitter in our hair and mystery stains on our clothes, but the joy of watching your child grow and learn is worth every bit of it. And just to clarify, you’re still the ultimate kiddo’s go-to, especially when it comes to picking noses!
  2. Keep the Sick Kids Home, Please!
We understand that juggling work and family is tough, especially when your boss doesn’t get it. But if your child is feeling under the weather—even if they seem fine—consider keeping them at home. We get sick too, especially since we’re the ones who provide constant care. We know that daycare life means germs are inevitable, but we’d appreciate your help in keeping the classroom as healthy as possible. Sending a feverish child hyped up on Tylenol? We’ll probably have to call you in a couple of hours anyway.
  3. Your Kind Words Mean the World
Every day can feel like a marathon as we manage a bunch of energetic toddlers, and sometimes it’s all too easy to feel unappreciated. When you take a moment to express your gratitude for our hard work, it genuinely lifts our spirits. Sure, the fun of playing with paint and dough is great, but hearing a simple “thank you” makes it all worthwhile. And if you bring snacks? Well, we might just have to follow you home for more!
  4. We Understand the Ups and Downs of Playtime
When your child comes home with a bite mark or a scratch, or if they happen to be the one causing mischief, we feel your pain. Breaking the news to you is never easy, and we share in the frustration. Many of us are parents ourselves, so we understand the delicate balance of emotions involved. Just know that we’re not relishing the chance to deliver bad news; we wish it didn’t happen at all.
  5. Get to Know Us Too!
While we love discussing your child’s day during drop-off or pickup, we’re also interested in who you are outside of daycare. We know everything from your little one’s favorite story to their quirky nap habits, and we’d love to learn more about you as well. Engaging in small talk about life outside our walls helps create a stronger bond. And yes, we do have hobbies beyond fingerpainting and reading Llama Llama! Once your kiddo graduates, don’t hesitate to reach out for a coffee—we know how to kick back and relax!
