In a candid conversation with lifestyle contributor Janet Reed, actress Emma Stone, 34, opened up about her journey as a working mom, facing rejection, and what truly matters to her.
Was it challenging to shake off such a heavy role when filming wrapped?
It honestly filled me with gratitude. Stepping away from the set, I was reminded of how lucky I am to return home to my loving family. I cherish my relationship with my partner and my wonderful kids. It really made me reflect on what’s essential in life. At the end of the day, it’s all about connections. It’s the simple moments—saying “I love you” and spending quality time together—that matter.
What do you think about the Oscar buzz surrounding your performance?
I view it with immense appreciation, especially considering the plethora of films and remarkable performances out there. Hearing feedback like, “I loved your work!” from both audiences and peers is incredibly touching. I don’t take it lightly at all.
Did you always know you wanted to be an actress?
My parents didn’t have acting in mind for me, but they encouraged all of us to pursue our dreams. When I expressed my desire to act, they were a bit surprised, saying, “That’s not what we meant!” Yet, they really did instill that belief in me.
How do you juggle your career and motherhood?
Motherhood brings an immense responsibility, and the love for my children is all-consuming. I know my role is to ensure they are happy, educated, and secure, giving them every opportunity possible in life. I think every mom feels that way. I genuinely hope to be a good mother. My kids seem happy and well-adjusted, so I feel fortunate to have a lifestyle that allows me to explore different emotional depths in my work. This balance helps me navigate various aspects of life, though I sometimes feel like I’m falling apart in others. I consider myself lucky.
What drives you?
I’ve been labeled as “brave” and “fearless” for some of my roles, but I don’t see myself that way. Acting isn’t frightening to me; it’s exhilarating and enjoyable! For me, fear is more about bungee jumping or riding in a speeding boat—those things terrify me! I’ve faced rejection for being too pretty or not pretty enough, which is all relative. The industry doesn’t shake my confidence. Now at 34, I’m comfortable with where I am in life.
