Since becoming a parent, I’ve found myself uttering phrases that I never thought would escape my lips. Motherhood has transformed me into a fountain of ridiculous questions and nonsensical statements. Sometimes, I finish a sentence and think, “What was that supposed to mean?” Here are some gems I’ve shared recently:
- “If you don’t put your shoes on, I’m leaving without you.” Really? Where could I possibly go without her? The backyard? The garage?
- “Do you want me to spank you?” Honestly, how many kids would ever respond with a “yes” to that?
- “If you don’t tidy up that mess, you’re going straight to bed.” It’s only 2 PM, for crying out loud!
- “If you don’t stop, I’m turning this car around and we’re going home.” This threat usually surfaces on days when we have to go to the doctor, the bank, or preschool—fun times!
- “You have 30 seconds to clean up those toys or I’m throwing them all away.” As if I’d really want to toss out all those toys. What a hassle!
- “If you don’t eat, I won’t give you any more dinner.” Makes zero sense, right?
- “I’m going to count to three, and you better stop, or else.” Even I have no clue what “or else” means!
- “Are you trying to make me mad?” Silly me, my toddlers aren’t plotting against me; they just ignore me until my head spins!
- “If you don’t start listening, I’m going to stop talking.” Yep, said that to the ones who aren’t listening at all.
- “If you keep playing with your food, I’m going to take it away.” Let’s be real; if they’re not eating, they probably aren’t hungry.
I know I’ll need to step up my game as they grow older and realize they’ve had the upper hand all along. Until then, they have 30 seconds or else…
