Ithaca is a unique gem that has captured my heart—after living in many places, I genuinely can’t picture calling anywhere else home. If you’re in Ithaca with little ones, here’s a list of ten fun activities that are sure to entertain!
- Cass Park and the Ithaca Children’s Garden: This delightful corner of Cass Park is a must-visit. Kids can explore a vibrant fruit and vegetable garden, nibble on fresh snacks, and learn about how to grow their own food. There’s a giant turtle sculpture showcasing the phases of the moon, and kids will love climbing and playing on art installations, mushroom-shaped drums, and whimsical playhouses.
- Chasing Waterfalls: Ithaca is known for its stunning landscapes, and with over 100 waterfalls dotting the area, you can spend hours discovering these natural wonders. Some waterfalls are perfect for splashing around, while others offer breathtaking views. Don’t miss Taughannock Falls, which is even taller than Niagara Falls!
- Ice Cream Treats: What’s a trip without some ice cream? Ithaca boasts a variety of sweet spots, but two of my favorites are Purity and Smart Yogurt. Purity offers a plethora of ice cream flavors, including dairy-free options, all served at charming red picnic tables. If yogurt is more your style, Smart Yogurt has you covered with locally made delights and a toppings bar that’s sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.
- Bounce Away at Niki’s Party Place: If the kids are bouncing off the walls, take them to Niki’s Party Place (commonly known as the bounce house in the mall). For just $5, they can jump and play for a full hour while you relax and catch up on your phone. It’s a perfect escape during colder months or whenever you need a quick energy release!
- Playful Pup Park: Did you bring your furry friends along? Ithaca has a fantastic off-leash dog park with separate areas for big and small dogs. Kids can enjoy running around, playing fetch, and making new four-legged friends. There are picnic tables for a snack break, but keep in mind, the restrooms are a bit of a trek for little ones.
- Ithaca Farmer’s Market: Saturdays are vibrant at the Ithaca Farmer’s Market. With over 50 vendors offering everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts, you can easily spend hours tasting delicious food and soaking up the lively atmosphere. Plus, it’s located right by Cayuga Lake, where you can feed ducks or even catch a scenic lunch cruise.
- Wine Tasting at Americana Vineyards: For the parents seeking a peaceful outing, head to Americana Vineyards for a delightful wine tasting experience. While you savor the flavors, kids can enjoy some friendly pets with the resident dogs and cats. The attached café serves some of the best food in town, making it a win-win for everyone!
- Sagan Planet Walk: If you have aspiring astronomers in your family, embark on the Sagan Planet Walk. This unique walking tour is a scale model of the solar system, starting at The Commons. With a Solar System passport in hand, you’ll journey from the sun to Pluto, ending at the Sciencenter, where kids can explore interactive exhibits and play.
- Myers Park Adventure: Spend the day at Myers Park, which is perfect for both relaxing and recreational activities. With RV camping spots, playgrounds, volleyball courts, and even a swimming area, this park is an ideal spot for a family picnic. There’s a small fee for vehicle entry, but it’s worth it for a day of fun!
- Cayuga Nature Center: Last but not least, the Cayuga Nature Center is a fantastic place for kids to connect with nature. With intriguing animal exhibits, a six-story treehouse, and scenic hiking trails, there’s no shortage of adventure. This is a beloved spot for summer camps, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.
