Restraint: The Most Challenging Aspect of Parenting

Parenting is a journey filled with challenges, isn’t it? From navigating the trials of potty training at the most inconvenient gas stations to the endless saga of sleep training at various ages, it can be overwhelming. Then there’s that heart-wrenching moment when you drop your little one off at daycare for the very first time. But let’s face it: the hardest part of parenting is the daily practice of restraint.

Restraint means standing firm when your toddler has a complete meltdown because she must have that LaLaLoopsy doll, even if it means leaving Target with half a cart of groceries abandoned in the aisles. Believe me, the staff would much rather restock than witness the chaos of your tiny tornado wreaking havoc among the shelves.

When your daughter requests her favorite book, Barbie Wants to Be a Ballerina, for the umpteenth time, restraint is what drives you to read it aloud once more, even as you feel your sanity slipping away with each repeated line. After all, it’s still reading, and who knows? She might grow up to be a talented author herself.

When your five-year-old insists he’s ready to pour his own milk for breakfast, restraint is biting your tongue as you watch the milk jug teeter dangerously in his small hands. And yes, letting your three-year-old wear frog rain boots and a tutu to daycare every day for six months is another example of restraint—no matter how ridiculous it seems, fashion can wait.

When another child pushes your little one off the swing, it takes all your strength to resist the urge to intervene with a dramatic confrontation. And during those exhausting nighttime skirmishes when they refuse to stay in their own bed, it’s restraint that prevents you from giving in and allowing them to sleep with you, just this once.

Restraint is also about resisting the temptation to call your child’s sleepaway camp every time you see a photo that makes you worry about their happiness. It’s about making them finish that last-minute history project at 9 PM, teaching them the importance of preparedness.

And when your daughter threatens you with, “Let me go get my American Girl doll,” after you mention taking it away for bad behavior, it’s time for a strategic timeout in the bathroom before you respond in a way you might regret.

After years of motherhood, I can confidently say that I’m still learning the art of restraint. Most days, it involves channeling my inner “Fat Amy” and reminding myself to think twice before reacting. But every day, I put in the effort.
