I had an eye-opening moment recently while I was prepping lunch for my kids. It dawned on me that despite their ages (almost 11 and 13), I still find myself treating them like they’re in their toddler years. Honestly, it’s a bit surprising considering I’m still stuck in the mindset of a 12-year-old myself! You’d think I’d be ready to let them spread their wings and embrace their growing independence. But alas, here we are:
- I still peel their oranges. Seriously, what’s up with that?
- I pour their milk for them. I mean, who even drinks milk at this age?
- I start my son’s shower just to warm up the water. Really?
- I can’t help but take a whiff of them as they pass by to check for any odors. Yeah, not my proudest moment.
- I still get all “goo goo gaa gaa” when they scrape their knees. Come on, just grab a band-aid already!
- I serve my son’s meals. I mean, I wouldn’t even do that for our dog!
But today marked a change. I’m proud to announce that I packed unpeeled oranges in their lunches. Small steps toward independence!

To sum it up, while I might still have some toddler-like habits with my big kids, I’m working on letting them grow up a little bit more each day.
