If you’re looking for kid-friendly fun in Scottsdale, Arizona, you’re in for a treat! After relocating here five years ago due to my partner’s job transfer, we uncovered some fantastic spots that our children still love to visit with friends and family. Here’s a rundown of ten must-do activities in Scottsdale that are sure to delight both kids and adults.
- Cosanti: This unique place is the brainchild of Paolo Soleri, an American-Italian architect who made Scottsdale his home in 1956. You can tour his stunning property and its whimsical gardens. When my son first saw it, he exclaimed, “Are we in Star Wars?” Talk about a win! You can watch the staff create bronze and ceramic wind bells right on site. And the best part? It’s free to visit!
- Hiking Trails: Scottsdale is dotted with trails perfect for little adventurers. The Gateway Trailhead and Lost Dog Trailhead are two fantastic starting points. With maps, mile markers, and designated turnaround spots, these trails are ideal for family hikes.
- Butterfly Wonderland: Get ready to be enchanted at America’s largest butterfly atrium! This magical place allows butterflies to flit around and land on visitors, spreading smiles all around. After exploring the butterfly conservatory, don’t miss the live ant colony and touch tank featuring stingrays. The staff has done a fantastic job making it family-friendly!
- Sugar Bowl: This nostalgic spot has roots in the cartoon world, as it inspired many of Bill Keane’s Family Circus strips. Today, you can enjoy delicious meals, indulge in ice cream, and even play some arcade games. It’s the perfect escape for kids bursting with energy!
- Take a Ride on Ollie the Trolley: Hop on Ollie the Trolley near Fashion Square for a delightful ride around Old Town. The kids love it, and it’s a charming way to see local sights, including the Waterfront and 5th Avenue.
- The Simple Farm: Run by the wonderful duo, Lila and Mark, this farm opens its doors every Thursday for the community to enjoy seasonal harvests. Sip some coffee, savor caramels, and enjoy great conversations. They even offer classes on backyard gardening and canning!
- Desert Botanical Gardens: A visit here is essential! Witness the beauty of local flora and enjoy the many events they host throughout the year. Strolling through the pathways, my kids love pointing out their favorite cacti, and there are plenty of benches for a break in the shade.
- Fountain Hills: Just a short drive away, this picturesque town boasts a stunning 560-foot fountain! The nearby playground, complete with splash pads, is perfect for little ones to cool off. Plus, there are plenty of eateries nearby for a post-play snack.
- Musical Instrument Museum: If your kids are into music, this museum is a must-visit! It features an incredible collection of instruments from around the world. I even got to enjoy a concert there recently, proving it’s not just for kids. Check out their upcoming performances!
- Splash Pads: Scottsdale is known for its splash pads, which can be found at most shopping centers. Before moving here, I had never seen one! Some of my favorites include The Quarter and Desert Ridge—perfect spots for kids to cool off and burn off some energy.
