Adult Summer Camp: No Counselors, Just Fun (and Drinks)!

Last summer, my partner and I found ourselves at a Bat Mitzvah held at a sleepaway camp nestled in the Poconos. We spent two glorious days disconnected from our phones, indulging in camp cuisine, sipping on bug juice, and crashing on mini cots in same-sex bunks with a bunch of strangers. And you know what? It was absolutely amazing!

So what if I had to prep for the big Saturday night dance in a bathroom packed with 10 other girls, all vying for space in front of the one tiny mirror? There were s’mores! And Coronas! Not to mention an intense tug-of-war competition! Plus, I got to rock face paint and a blue tutu all weekend long, because we’ve got spirit, yes we do, we’ve got spirit how about YOU?!

Okay, maybe I did get a tad overexcited. But this summer marks the fifth time my kids will be off at sleepaway camp, and honestly, I can’t help but feel a twinge of envy each year as I wave goodbye to that bus. Turns out, I’m not alone in this feeling. Enter Camp No Counselors, a company that offers curated, boozy weekends at various camps across the country, just for adults—yes, that includes us!

Founded by Mark Roberts in 2013 after he hosted a weekend for friends, Camp No Counselors aims to give adults a chance to escape their everyday personas and embrace their inner child. “Most of our adult lives require us to put on a confident front, but camp allows us to be genuinely vulnerable,” he explains on the CNC website. “It’s a space where you can truly be yourself, and more people should get to experience that.”
