Yesterday was Jake’s seventh birthday, and luck was on our side when he had a day off school for optional parent-teacher conferences (optional? Please, I’ll pass). This gave us the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together. Being his special day, I took on the monumental task of being the ultimate, attentive mom—the antithesis of what some might call a “Scary Mommy.”
A Special Breakfast
Instead of the usual cold cereal or breakfast bars, I kicked off the day with a stack of homemade chocolate chip pancakes. “You really know how to make pancakes?” Jake asked, his eyes wide with surprise. Yes, my little man, surprise!
Assembly Adventures
I spent about four hours assembling an array of toys that I should have known better than to buy, given their complicated assembly requirements. But hey, I persevered and managed to put everything together (with just a few choice words and a couple of leftover pieces that I’m pretty sure were not critical).
Celebration at the Pinball Museum
In the afternoon, we celebrated Jake’s birthday at a pinball museum, surrounded by his friends, where I found myself in the midst of games like flag football, catch, and happy hostess duties. Not once did I raise my voice—yup, I was channeling my inner saint! If it took him twenty minutes to put on his shoes, I was all for it.
Being Present
Whenever he needed me, I was right there, fully present. No work calls, no distracting TV, no “just one minute”—just a mom completely engaged with her son throughout the day. As I tucked him in that night, I asked if he had enjoyed his birthday. “The best!” he exclaimed, and my heart swelled with pride.
Reflection on Parenting
This is where I should probably reflect on how vital it is to unplug and focus entirely on our children. They deserve a warm breakfast and a mother who doesn’t get frustrated, someone who is wholly dedicated to them. I felt accomplished, and the long evening spent catching up on tasks after a day of fun was worth it.
Of course, it was all worth it in the end. But let’s be real—being that “perfect mom” can be utterly exhausting! Thank goodness birthdays only come once a year.

Conclusion
In summary, spending Jake’s birthday as a fully engaged mom was rewarding, yet it highlighted the challenges of maintaining that level of attentiveness all the time. Sometimes, it’s just nice to be a little less perfect and more real.
