Ah, motherhood! It’s a wild ride filled with late-night soothing sessions for a fussy baby and endless negotiations with a three-year-old over whether they can have just one more M&M to use the potty. While we often roll our eyes at these exhausting moments, the next stages of parenting feel downright terrifying. As my seven-year-old gets ready to “move up” from kindergarten, I can’t help but think about how quickly he’ll be navigating the treacherous waters of pre-teen crushes and getting his driver’s license. Honestly, it makes me appreciate these days when my biggest dilemma is whether or not to let them watch “Bubble Guppies” for the hundredth time. Here are ten moments I’m not looking forward to:
- When my kids inevitably want to know if I ever tried smoking, drank at parties, or engaged in any other rebellious behavior, and I’m left to decide between a fib or a slightly embellished truth.
- The day I change my son’s sheets as a teenager and find evidence of… well, you know what I mean.
- Having “the talk.” My partner and I both have to take turns, but let’s be real; I’m the one who gets to explain the wonders of tampons and how babies make their grand entrance while trying to make “You’ll bleed every month for the next 25 years!” sound like a party.
- Hearing “I hate you!” and knowing they really might mean it at that moment.
- The first time one of my kids faces bullying, whether it’s cyberbullying, on the playground, or from the local “queen bees.” I hope it doesn’t happen, but it seems pretty unavoidable these days.
- Living with a moody, dramatic teenage daughter. Let’s face it: there’s only room for one diva in this house, and I’m already occupying that space. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for giving me a taste of my own medicine—your laughter is noted.
- Coming to the realization that I can no longer help with their homework (hello, algebra!). This is bound to give them an inflated sense of their intelligence.
- Setting curfews and then lying awake, staring at the clock, anxiously waiting for them to come home. Thank goodness for texting! Remember when we had to make those excruciating late-night calls to our parents?
- Two words: learner’s permit.
- The moment I transition from “Mommy” to just “Mom.” Ouch.
