Remember that film, Sliding Doors? You know, the one starring Gwyneth Paltrow that dives into two alternate realities based on whether or not she catches a train? It’s all about destiny, chance, and the twists of fate. While it may not be a cinematic masterpiece, I have a soft spot for it.
Right now, I’m experiencing my own version of Sliding Doors. My daughter, Mia, was all set to start school yesterday, but thanks to Hurricane Taylor, the school is closed—on the very first day back from summer break!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been eagerly anticipating the start of classes for weeks. Not just because I’m ready to tackle the morning chaos of lunches, uniforms, and homework, but because I really need to finish this book. With the kids around, it’s practically impossible to get any writing done!
So, when I heard about the school closure, it felt like a cruel joke. I honestly thought someone was pulling my leg. Sure, I know we’re fortunate; our home is mostly fine, and it could be so much worse. But really, come on, Baltimore Gas & Electric, give me a break!
A Day of Unexpected Adventures
As I walked through the day, I couldn’t help but imagine how it would have unfolded if school had been in session. If I had dropped Mia off at 8 a.m., I would have discovered who her teacher was and where her locker is. I would’ve stayed for the boys’ orientations an hour later, meeting their teachers and exploring their classrooms. Afterward, I’d have tried to get them to play together while I snuck in a few minutes on the computer. Then, we’d pick Mia up, and the kids would have some playtime before dinner, where I’d once again attempt to squeeze in some writing. That was the plan.
Instead, we all slept in. While I should have been making lunches, I found myself snuggled in bed with my boys. We went to the zoo in the morning with friends instead of being at the school for drop-off. Later, while I would have been chatting with other parents about classes and sports, we indulged in my favorite ice cream. We even dropped off one of Mia’s friends, and Ben had his own playdate, before we all gathered for pizza, with the kids giggling and playing at full volume.
It turned out to be a delightful day—one last summer adventure before the school routine kicks in. Honestly, it might have been even better than what I had anticipated.
Another Day of Impromptu Fun
But, guess what? School is closed again today, so I’m bracing myself for another round of our impromptu summer fun. I have to say, I’m starting to disagree with fate on this one. I’m pretty sure the kiddos should be back in school by now. I’m officially over summer!
