The Greatest Mom Ever

“If I could choose my mom, I’d definitely choose you,” my 9-year-old declares.
“That’s really sweet,” I respond, a bit skeptically. “What makes you say that?”
“Because you’re the greatest mom ever,” she replies, then dances out of the room like a little whirlwind.
Really? No way.
There are days when I feel like I’m winning a contest for the worst mom in the world. I’m not talking about those who harm their children—that’s a whole different arena. Instead, I’m grappling with the more subtle shortcomings of not quite measuring up to Mary Poppins’ standard of being “practically perfect in every way.”
I rush the kids through breakfast, reminding them they’ll be late for school. I threaten to take away the toddler’s beloved toy if she doesn’t stop pretending to be a lion around the dinner table. I roll my eyes when my middle schooler dramatically collapses because she stubbed her toe. I lose my cool when my youngest rambles on about her day for what feels like an eternity. I sometimes even imagine life without kids altogether.
So, please don’t choose me if you’re looking for the best mom in the universe.
But do choose me!
Pick me because I’m not scared of spiders or climbing high places. I won’t shy away from getting a scraped knee. Failing doesn’t frighten me; what terrifies me is not trying, especially when you genuinely want to give it a shot but hold back for some reason. It takes real courage and faith to take that leap. I can teach you how to be brave, but I want you to remember that it’s perfectly okay to ask for help and reach your goals alongside others.
You should choose me for my impressive skills—I can cartwheel, skateboard, roller skate, and ice skate. I genuinely enjoy attending baseball games, and not just for the snacks. Watching you play soccer and seeing that fierce determination on your face as you approach an open shot on goal? Priceless—even if you miss.
You should also pick me because I’ll always hold your hand during takeoff and landing. Transitioning from one place to another can be daunting, and having someone to hold onto really makes a difference.
I promise to always tell you the truth—not just the kind that hurts without offering solutions. I’ll share what you need to hear, even if it’s tough to swallow. Truth is like a drug; some people crave it constantly, while others avoid it. Finding that balance in giving and receiving it is crucial.
You should choose me because I know exactly how you like to snuggle up on my arm when it’s time for bed. I can kiss you goodnight without getting caught in your headgear. And when I leave your room after tucking you in, I’ll always respond to your “night-night-see-you-in-the-morning-love-you” with my own “night-night-see-you-in-the-morning-love-you.”
You should pick me because I make your lunches fresh every morning instead of preparing them the night before. That’s my way of showing love.
You should choose me because I believe in magic. This includes everything from the Tooth Fairy to the small miracles in life, like my peonies that bloom year after year, and the incredible wonders of the universe. Algorithms can only explain so much. The fact that we exist at all is a kind of miracle, isn’t it?
You should pick me because we are two peas in a pod. We’re perfectionists at heart. We cringe at the thought of making mistakes and often feel responsible for others’ sadness, even when we did nothing wrong. We’re overflowing with enthusiasm and brilliant ideas that just can’t be contained; they come spilling out like kittens begging for attention.
So, yes, choose me! There’s no one who knows you better or loves you more. I am indeed the greatest mom ever, as long as I can be your mom.
