Reflections from a Concert: A Night Out with the Band

Last Saturday night, my partner Mike and I ventured out to catch a concert featuring The Swell Season, a band you might recall from the film Once. (If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a must-watch!) While it’s not our usual music choice, they were impressive enough for us to step outside our comfort zone—once a year, right?

Here are my thoughts from this rare evening away from the kids:

Carded After Three Kids

First off, being carded after having three kids is downright laughable. I almost considered flashing my stretch marks just to prove my age!

The Opening Act

Opening acts can be a real downer. Nobody’s really there to hear them; they’re just filling the time until the main event. The poor guy who opened for Swell Season was actually booed—awkward! Though, honestly, he had a bit of a serial killer vibe, which didn’t help.

Personal Space Issues

When it comes to standing room only concerts, personal space seems to vanish. As someone who values her bubble, this was not ideal. And let’s be real: trying to discreetly pass gas doesn’t earn you any space; it just prompts your partner to announce loudly, “Did someone just fart?”.

Standing for Two Hours

Standing for two hours straight was definitely more enjoyable a decade ago.

Teenagers and Concerts

If you’re curious about your 13-year-old neighbor’s experience at over-21 venues, brace yourself. The answer is likely a no, but if it’s a yes, you might want to rethink having her babysit.

Live Music vs. Cozy Nights

Live music can be exhilarating, but honestly, nothing beats a cozy Saturday night on the couch with my laptop. Yep, I’m a total loser!

Summary

A night out at a concert can be a rollercoaster of emotions, from the comedic to the cringe-worthy. While I enjoyed the experience, I realized that my true comfort zone is nestled on the couch with my laptop—definitely not a loser move!
