In Tribute to My Daughter, Lila Thompson

Hello, I’m Sarah Thompson, a proud mother of three wonderful daughters, ages 10 to 17. On April 4th, 2013, my world was turned upside down.

The tragedy began when my vibrant 15-year-old daughter, Lila, attended a gathering and was assaulted by four individuals. A few days later, an image of this horrific event circulated through her school and community, turning Lila into a target for relentless harassment. What followed was an unimaginable nightmare, as her peers used this trauma to inflict further pain upon her.

In just a few days, the confident girl I knew began to fade away, and despite her brave attempts to rise above the situation, each step forward was met with another emotional hurdle. Lila, and all of us, were left grappling with the trauma, desperately seeking the help she so urgently needed.

For 17 long months, we wandered through our lives asking ourselves, “Why us? Why Lila?” We pleaded for support from the very institutions designed to protect our children. Tragically, on that fateful night, Lila took her own life in a moment of despair, while I was downstairs, completely unaware, and her friend was just outside her door.

The memory of finding my daughter that night is one I will carry forever. We knew she was in pain and struggling, but I believed she would conquer this dark chapter in her life. We had countless conversations about her feelings, and I never imagined she would act on her thoughts of despair. Anyone who knew Lila would agree—she was the calm and wise one among her friends, always offering sound advice and support. She was a fighter.

But what happened to Lila, and how she left this world, does not define who she was. Those tragic events distorted her view of life and shattered her spirit. Being so young made it even harder for her to cope with such trauma.

Since Lila’s passing, I have strived to create a “new normal” for my two younger daughters, who are also grieving and looking to me for strength. I want them to understand that while our lives have been shattered, we remain united. We will navigate this together, and it’s okay to cry or falter, but we will not allow ourselves to break apart. I promise to always be there for them. We honor Lila every day, keeping her memory alive in our hearts and conversations as if she were still with us.

When Lila was born, we spent the first seven years of her life together, just the two of us. Although her father was an important figure in her life, I often felt like a single mom. From the moment she was placed in my arms, I vowed to create a better future for us. I pursued a degree in Psychology and later a Master’s in Counseling, with Lila as my inspiration. Those seven years were the happiest of my life.

Through this immense loss, I have learned the importance of reaching out and making a difference in others’ lives, living each moment with gratitude. My mission now is to advocate for young girls who have faced similar trauma by sharing Lila’s story, encouraging them to speak out and challenge societal perceptions of females. I also address the pressing issues of youth harassment, commonly referred to as “bullying,” and openly discuss suicide to help dismantle the stigma surrounding it. By engaging in honest conversations, we can better understand the feelings many young people are experiencing.

In this digital age, it is crucial to cultivate compassion and empathy in our youth, rather than allowing them to become desensitized by the constant exposure to graphic content. Lila fought valiantly to reclaim her voice amidst her struggles, and I witnessed her sadness and anger daily. While I grapple with frustration over her experiences, I choose to channel this energy into positive actions. My aim is to be a beacon of change in her memory, transforming our pain into something meaningful. Though I bear the weight of losing my daughter, her spirit continues to inspire me to make a lasting impact in this world. I invite you to join me in this mission.
