10 Ways Teen Girls Can Connect With Their Moms

For the first several years of her life, my daughter and I were inseparable. She adored spending time with me, always requesting a hug and kiss at bedtime, and she would promptly burst into my room every morning. However, once those tween years hit, it felt like we were on opposite sides of a fence, battling over everything from bedtime to whether she could join Instagram. Fast forward to today—I’m now navigating the whirlwind of having a teenage daughter. Sure, we still have our moments of tension, but as she inches closer to adulthood, we’ve discovered a lot of common ground. Here are ten ways my teenage daughter and I totally vibe:

1. Hormonal Rollercoaster

Ah, PMS. The mood swings, bloating, and irritability are now part of my daughter’s life. She finally gets how challenging it is to manage the world’s demands while dealing with chaotic hormones. We bond over brownies, know when to give each other space, and appreciate those little acts of kindness, like a surprise cup of tea at bedtime or a mental health day from school.

2. Sweat Happens

What used to be a mild annoyance is now a full-fledged crisis. My daughter has learned that sweat can come with a side of hormones that might make her smell like a roast chicken one day and an unwashed elephant the next—despite showering two hours earlier. I used to get teased for my post-workout smell; now she’s just as likely to sniff herself and declare, “Ew, I stink!”

3. Leggings Are Life

Once upon a time, my daughter thought my black leggings were the ultimate fashion faux pas. Fast forward to today, and she has a collection of her own, making leggings the go-to choice for both of us. Who knew comfort could be so chic?

4. Casual Cursing

I used to be super careful about my language around her, but now, let’s just say I’ve loosened up a bit. My daughter still knows that cursing isn’t typically accepted in our home, but sometimes a well-placed expletive is just what you need—like when you leave your wallet at the store (guilty as charged) or when that crush catches you at a less-than-glamorous moment.

5. Friendship Matters

My daughter used to roll her eyes at me for spending time with my friends. Now, she’s in the same boat and asks for advice about her friendships. I’m thrilled to help her cultivate those supportive, meaningful relationships that I cherish.

6. Bathroom Breaks Are Sacred

When the bathroom door is shut, knocking is strictly forbidden! My daughter now understands the importance of alone time, realizing that the bathroom is the perfect place for contemplation and self-care—it’s not just about hygiene!

7. We Know About the Birds and the Bees

While my daughter may not have firsthand experience with sex, she’s definitely clued in on the basics. I’ve learned to embrace the awkwardness; sometimes she gives me a “Ew, gross!” look, while other times, we share a knowing glance. It’s all part of the journey of being open.

8. Heels Are Overrated

There was a time when my daughter was obsessed with high heels, always trying them on during shopping trips. Now that she has her own pair, she quickly realizes that beauty can come at the cost of comfort. Welcome to the club, kiddo!

9. Food Awareness

We’re both a bit too conscious about what we eat—thanks society! I’ve noticed my daughter paying closer attention to her own eating habits. We have meaningful discussions about nutrition and the unrealistic standards women face regarding their bodies.

10. Mom Was Once a Teen Too

There’s a lightbulb moment for girls around the age of 13. Instead of the typical “You don’t understand!” I now hear questions like, “What was your first date like?” It’s refreshing to connect over shared experiences, and I’m enjoying my role as the “expert” in her eyes.

While raising teenage girls can be quite the challenge, recognizing our shared experiences makes the ride a whole lot smoother. Learning to connect with each other through humor and understanding is key.
