A charming German Shepherd named Gavel was dismissed from the police dog academy in Queensland, Australia, for being overly friendly. Rather than pursuing potential suspects, Gavel preferred to engage them in playtime, which certainly isn’t the usual approach for a police dog. While we can’t fathom why he couldn’t just shower lawbreakers with affection, it seems that’s not the way things operate down under.
But fear not; this isn’t just a tale of a dog failing to meet expectations. Initially, when Gavel arrived at the academy, police officials declared, “Gavel hails from a distinguished lineage… if his ancestry is any indication, within 16 months he’ll be tracking down criminals as a proud member of the Queensland Dog Squad.” Such high expectations proved to be overwhelming for the pup. He’s got his own personality, after all!
Shortly into his training, Gavel was deemed “too sociable” by his trainers, who concluded that he lacked the necessary skills for a frontline role, resulting in his dismissal from the program. Gavel, with his exuberant spirit, likely thought, “Hey friends, who wants to play? I’m thrilled to be with you! Look at me spin around! Wait, where are you going? Don’t leave! Let me show you my new toy.”
Fortunately, while being fostered at the Queensland governor’s residence, the wonderful staff decided against finding him a new home. Instead, they offered him a role far cooler than merely being a police dog. Gavel now serves as the Vice-Regal Dog, or Gavel VRD for those of us who are not in the know.
In his new position, Gavel enjoys attending government events and greeting visitors at Queensland’s Government House, proudly wearing a ceremonial coat adorned with the state’s emblem. He can now be as affectionate as he likes, and the people of Queensland adore him for it.
According to Governor Paul de Jersey’s office, “He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, changed careers, and has brought immense joy to the governor, Mrs. de Jersey, the staff at Government House, and the countless Queenslanders who visit.”
If being friendly is a flaw, Gavel simply didn’t want to be right. It appears he has found his true calling and is relishing all the attention that comes with it. Such a good boy!
