Embracing the New Mom Journey

Four months ago, I officially became a member of the New Mom Club. The moment my daughter arrived, my world transformed in ways I never anticipated.

Is that an exaggerated claim? Perhaps. But is it true? Without a doubt.

Joining the New Mom Club doesn’t come with a fancy membership card or a celebratory gathering. Instead, it brings a whirlwind of incredible, challenging, joyful, and sometimes perplexing experiences that create an unbreakable bond between you and your fellow new moms.

So, what does new motherhood truly entail?

Being a new mom means…

  • Learning to put others first, often at the expense of your own needs.
  • Constantly questioning if you’re making the right choices.
  • Welcoming more visitors to your home than ever before, realizing they’re more interested in your baby than you.
  • Yearning for the life you had before motherhood, yet slowly forgetting what it was like while knowing you wouldn’t trade your current life for anything.
  • Shedding tears when your little one cries, when you leave them for the first time, or when they reach significant milestones.
  • Acknowledging that much of your preparation might have been in vain, yet finding comfort in the chaos.
  • Developing a newfound appreciation for your own mother. (Seriously, give her a call to express your gratitude!)
  • Watching your partner interact with your child and falling in love with them in a whole new light.
  • Finally grasping the depth of your parents’ unconditional love.
  • Experiencing an embarrassing amount of leaking.
  • Living through days that feel endless but months that fly by.
  • Sacrificing the freedom of your previous life for the unpredictable nature of motherhood.
  • Relishing a trip to the dentist as the only moment of ‘me time’ in a busy week.
  • Sniffing stains to decipher whether it’s pee, spit-up, breast milk, or something else entirely.
  • Instinctively trying to catch or block those bodily fluids with your hands.
  • Discussing poop multiple times a day like it’s the most normal conversation topic.
  • Adjusting your cleanliness standards; a shower every other day becomes a luxury.
  • Accepting new norms for sleep—celebrating a four-hour stretch as a major victory.
  • Letting go of all those judgments you held about parenting before you were in the trenches yourself.
  • Wondering if that other new mom you spot on the street is hoping for a friendly chat; trust me, she is.
  • Returning to work and feeling guilty about not spending enough quality time with your child.
  • Staying home and fretting about whether your baby would thrive better in a more stimulating environment.
  • Juggling remote work while fearing that neither your job nor your baby is receiving the attention they deserve.
  • Worrying, worrying, and more worrying.

New motherhood is powerful, demanding, overwhelming, exhilarating, confusing… and beautifully rewarding—even if you find yourself covered in various bodily fluids.
