Gingerbread House Disasters: A Cautionary Tale for the Holidays

Think constructing a gingerbread house is a delightful family pastime? Think again.

Despite knowing the potential pitfalls, we find ourselves making the same holiday choice year after year. Perhaps it’s the blend of festive music and the sugar rush from all those peppermint mochas that leaves us in a blissful stupor. Or maybe we just can’t resist the allure of a picture-perfect Hallmark Christmas. Whatever the reason, families continue to attempt gingerbread house building every December, only to end up with chaotic results.

Whether you opt for a pre-assembled gingerbread mansion or channel your inner architect to create one from scratch, the evening is likely to conclude with frustration. Few activities are as tedious as waiting for your sugary “cement” to set, and even if you miraculously manage to construct a standing house (magic?), the thought of eating it after your kids have touched every surface with their sticky hands is far from appetizing. Let’s not forget the inevitable candy-licking ritual before they even make it onto the house.

For most of us, keeping those cookie walls and roofs intact is a feat only seen in commercials and on the packaging. Don’t believe it? Check out the #gingerbreadhousefail posts on Instagram for a reality check.

This little one knew the house was doomed from the start.

When all else fails, just blame it on the dinosaurs.

You pictured a cozy bonding experience, but the kids lost interest after eight minutes, leaving you with a pile of broken pieces. On the upside, at least they didn’t eat all the candy!

“Uh oh, he’s crying! Quick, grab Mr. Wheels.”

Forget the five-second rule—this one’s a goner.

Now that’s about right.

Still, it might taste good!
