In a heartfelt post, Emily Jackson opened up about her unexpected c-section journey, reminding us that childbirth often doesn’t go as planned. With a clear vision for her second childbirth, Emily felt prepared after a relatively smooth experience with her first child. “I was determined to make this birth a joyful experience for my husband and me,” she shared with her followers. However, fate had other intentions.
At 32 weeks, Emily discovered her baby was in a breech position. By the time she went into labor at 37 weeks, the baby hadn’t shifted. “In California, midwives can’t deliver breech babies in hospitals, and there weren’t any local doctors willing to assist me with a breech delivery,” she explained. Reluctantly, Emily opted for a c-section.
“I was terrified of surgery,” she confessed in her viral Instagram post. “I worried about the scar and how it would affect my body and mind. I felt inadequate, as if I hadn’t truly given birth.” Despite her initial fears, Emily discovered that her c-section did not detract from her birth experience. “This decision forced me to educate myself, open my mind, and let go of my expectations. We had skin-to-skin contact in the OR, I witnessed my daughter’s birth, my husband cut the umbilical cord, and they delayed cord clamping. Most importantly, our baby was safe, healthy, and my doctor honored our choices.”
Emily proudly declared, “This scar is a testament to my strength as a #badassmama!” She clarified, however, that her sense of empowerment doesn’t stem from the method of delivery but from the journey of acceptance. “I had envisioned a natural birth, but I found peace in embracing my reality,” she stated.
Many women share similar struggles. Personally, I’ve felt that my c-section, which occurred after several exhausting hours of labor with my twins, was somehow less than ideal. But I’ve decided to move beyond the “what ifs” and embrace both my experience and the scars it left behind, grateful for my healthy children.
Emily echoes this sentiment: “Women should support one another in recognizing the beauty of all birth experiences. No single method is superior; each journey is unique and deserves celebration.”
