Tales from the Pantsuit Nation: A Tribute to My Mother

I have a story to share about my pantsuit journey.

My mother was an extraordinary woman, both strikingly beautiful and incredibly gifted. She graduated as Valedictorian at just 16, but due to family finances, she attended secretarial school instead of pursuing college. Eventually, she made a name for herself as a professional actress but chose to return to Delaware when she became a mother. Once my sister and I were both in school full-time, she jumped back into the workforce as the executive secretary for the newly formed Delaware State Arts Council, right in downtown Wilmington.

One chilly February afternoon, my dad came by to take her out for lunch. When she stood up from her desk wearing a pantsuit—yes, no skirt in sight—he turned on his heel and left her there. He wouldn’t be caught dead in public with a woman in slacks.

It was a long time ago, but I vividly remember the expression on her face as she recounted this story.

No. There’s no shaming me about pantsuits.

Fast forward to today, and two of my sons and my older daughter have already cast their votes for Hillary. My husband and I will be joining them on Tuesday. Finally!
