As I was packing lunches for my kids, it struck me how often I still behave as if my big kids—who are now 11 and 13—are still in their toddler years. Honestly, it’s a bit of a wake-up call for me, especially since I often feel like I’m perpetually stuck at 12 myself! You’d think I’d be thrilled to see them becoming more independent, but clearly, I’m not quite ready to let go. Here’s a look at some of my guilty habits:
- I still peel their oranges. Seriously, what am I thinking?
- I pour their milk for them. Does anyone else’s tween still drink milk?
- I turn on the shower for my son to warm up the water. This is just ridiculous, right?
- I give them a sniff when they walk past to check for odors. Gross, I know.
- I turn into a total softy when they get a scratch, fawning over them like they’re babies. Come on, just grab a band-aid!
- I serve my son’s food like he’s still a toddler. I mean, really? He’s ten!
But today was a turning point—I proudly packed their lunches with unpeeled oranges. Small strides, right?

In summary, even as my kids grow, I find myself clinging to habits that remind me of their toddler days. It’s a bittersweet realization, but I’m taking steps to embrace their independence, one unpeeled orange at a time.
