This year’s Mother’s Day was decent, even a bit enjoyable. I volunteer at my local church every second Sunday of the month, where I watch the little ones aged three to six. This meant I had to be there bright and early by 9 AM. After that, we enjoyed a lovely picnic and a quick hike at a nearby winery, with perfect weather. I managed to do a load of laundry and prepare a salad for both myself and my mom before heading to the church.
However, while scrolling through Facebook, I noticed friends showcasing elaborate Mother’s Day weekend celebrations. Some were hosting entire weekends dedicated to honoring motherhood, while I felt like I had to split my day with my own mom. It was frustrating. I already share my bed, meals, and even bathroom time with my kids. Shouldn’t I get at least one full day to celebrate me?
But then, I remembered I have a mom too. I have friends who have lost their mothers, and others whose moms live far away or simply don’t prioritize time with their daughters and grandchildren. I truly appreciate mine, and she absolutely deserves recognition. Still, wouldn’t it be great if we both had our own special day? Especially while I’m still navigating the joy of wiping little bottoms?
Guess what? Grandparents Day is coming up on September 7 this year! I had to look it up because, while I was aware of its existence, I wasn’t sure when it fell. Officially recognized by Congress in 1978, Grandparents Day is finally starting to gain the acknowledgment it deserves.
I’ve already set a reminder on my phone to collaborate with my kids’ schools this August to create crafts for Grandparents Day. The school year will still be fresh, and my kids, having just gone through Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, will be more than happy to participate.
Looking ahead to next year, I plan to reschedule my church volunteering to avoid working on Mother’s Day, which should be all about me. Are you with me, fellow moms?
