There’s nothing scarier than having your little one in the NICU—Halloween or not. But thanks to the creativity and kindness of the March of Dimes and the dedicated staff at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, the atmosphere has become a tad less frightening.
Who doesn’t love Halloween? (Seriously, if you don’t, we don’t want to hear it!) Even the tiniest babies are getting their chance to join in on the festive fun, dressed up in the most adorable costumes imaginable.
In a heartwarming effort, St. Luke’s Hospital teamed up with the March of Dimes to provide handmade Halloween outfits, a whimsical “Trick or Treat, smell my feet” card featuring each baby’s footprints, hand-crocheted pumpkins filled with goodies, and a Halloween-themed book for families to enjoy together—all for 35 little patients. Volunteers from March of Dimes, along with NICU nurses, crafted the costumes, while one of the staff members crocheted all the pumpkins to make each gift extra special.
Emily Johnson, the Communications Manager for March of Dimes, shared with us, “Families in the NICU may find themselves here for weeks or even months. It can be an emotional journey. Allowing them to celebrate Halloween with their little ones offers a sense of normalcy, letting them acknowledge their baby’s first milestones, which is what every parent cherishes.”
While the babies didn’t get to pick their outfits, we’re confident they didn’t mind one bit. They were decked out in superhero capes, colorful butterfly wings, and even sported a Captain America shield and a Kansas City Royals jersey—talk about cute overload! Each outfit was made with love, tailored for the tiniest heroes in the NICU.
Now, just picture this: when my little one was born earlier this year, he had a brief two-day stay in the NICU. It was a nerve-racking experience, but we were fortunate it was so short. Many families endure much longer stays, which can be overwhelming. That’s where the caring folks at March of Dimes and the remarkable nurses at St. Luke’s come to the rescue.
By giving these families and their babies a chance to celebrate Halloween, they’re providing a slice of normalcy in an otherwise stressful time. The little ones may have been dressed as superheroes, but we all know who the true heroes really are.

In summary, the heartfelt initiative by the March of Dimes and St. Luke’s Hospital has brought joy and comfort to families facing the challenges of a NICU stay. With handmade costumes and thoughtful gifts, they remind us that even in tough times, there’s always room for a little celebration.
