Dear Dad,
It’s me, your oldest daughter, and there’s something important I want to express. It’s something I’ve thought about saying many times, but I never quite knew how. So here it is: Thank you.
Thank you for always knowing where I was. That night at the lake felt just like any other. I was with a friend—a boy I had known for ages. You knew him too; we attended Junior Prom together. But still, I made sure to ask for your permission before heading out with him because I respected your rules, especially knowing you expected us back in an hour.
You and Mom were the “cool” parents, fostering an environment where my friends felt welcome. Your involvement was something I didn’t fully appreciate until it became crucial in a moment of peril. That night, I encountered something terrible, but it could have been much worse if not for you.
What happened at the lake was distressing. My friend didn’t ask for permission to kiss me, and when I told him to stop, he didn’t listen. He ignored my protests, my attempts to push him away, and even my physical resistance. “If you scream, no one will hear you.” In that moment, I was frozen by fear.
As a young woman, I thought I was prepared for such incidents. I envisioned myself being strong, knowing how to say no and stand my ground. But nothing could have truly prepared me for the chilling fear and the overpowering strength of someone I never expected to harm me.
Then, I remembered—you made me take my phone, just in case. In that terrifying moment, I managed to get it out of my pocket, but he snatched it away. My heart raced, and I felt powerless. But then my phone rang—it was you. An hour had passed, and you were calling to check in. He knew he had to let me answer; he understood that if I didn’t, you would come looking for me.
Your voice cut through the chaos in my mind. You told me to come home, but what I truly heard was, “I love you, I care for you, I will protect you.” It was as if your words broke the grip of fear, allowing me to escape a situation that could have drastically altered my life.
Though he left with threats, saying he would return and ruin my reputation, I still told the truth. I confided in Mom, and true to her fierce nature, she confronted him and his family. He retaliated at school, spreading lies about me, and senior year turned out to be one of the toughest times in my life. He tried to take my friends and my happiness, but he didn’t take my innocence. That remained intact, all because you knew where I was.
Words can hardly convey the weight of what you did for me that night, but I hope this letter sheds some light on the gratitude and respect I hold for you as a parent. So once again, thank you, Dad. Thank you for being vigilant and for knowing where I was when it mattered most.
