As the mother of a Latino son, I was shocked when another student casually mentioned that if Trump became president, my child would be sent back to Guatemala. As the mother of an immigrant child, who will soon grow into a Latino man, I feel the weight of these words deeply. Often, he’s the only child of color in his surroundings, which adds to the complexity of his experience.
I am also the daughter of a father who fully supported HRC but passed away this summer, never having had the chance to cast his vote. My mother, who ran for local office when I was just a tiny tot, worked full-time because she loved it, instilling in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.
As the wife of a man who has taken on the role of primary caregiver for our son for six months, attending every birthday party, school meeting, and sporting event, I am grateful for his support. He also takes charge of our dinner preparations each night, ensuring our family is nourished together.
But let’s not ignore my personal experiences. My first “kiss” was an unwanted encounter at a party, where I found myself pinned to the floor, having to pretend to enjoy it in order to escape safely. In college, I faced harassment for advocating mandatory rape education for fraternities after a horrific event in my dorm.
Today, I cast my vote. I voted for my father, my mother, my husband, my son and his future, the girl from my dorm, our planet, and for every one of us. #ImWithHer
