15 Characteristics of a Fierce Woman

“What a fierce woman.”

With those three words, a new kind of movement has ignited. A movement that had us jamming to pop anthems for days, sporting our own “fierce woman” tees, and eagerly checking our mailboxes for ballots. This revolution is likely to shift language as we know it.

The term “fierce” has transcended its previous meaning of being tough or aggressive. Now, it encapsulates being unstoppable, resilient, and a force to be reckoned with. It signifies a woman who is succeeding with such vigor that her rivals can’t help but react with petty insults. It conveys that women—every fierce woman—will no longer stand for being silenced, bullied, or objectified.

Ladies, we are reclaiming what it means to be fierce.

It’s our word, our bodies, our thoughts, and our lives. It’s our right to vote, too.

Here are the traits that define a “Fierce Woman” as we embrace them in 2016:

  1. We’re intelligent. We understand what we’re advocating for and why. We know that the term “feminist” is not a dirty word; it simply means we believe in equal rights for all genders.
  2. We don’t tolerate nonsense. We won’t allow anyone to push us around—not our little ones, not catcallers, and certainly not those who think celebrity gives them a free pass.
  3. We speak the truth. If we witness racism, sexism, or any form of discrimination, we will call it out without hesitation.
  4. We’re committed to our beliefs. Today, tomorrow, and beyond.
  5. No one will stand in our way.
  6. Bullies only fuel our determination. They motivate us to take action so that our loved ones can live without fear.
  7. We know that girls run the world. Your mother is a girl. Let that sink in!
  8. We nurture our loved ones. We strive to create a world for our children where love and acceptance triumph over fear and hatred.
  9. We’re incredibly strong—mentally, physically, and emotionally.
  10. We rise to the occasion. As Michelle Obama famously put it, “When they go low, we go high.”
  11. We embrace the chaos. Life is messy, our kids are messy, and so are our lives. We’ve faced tougher challenges before.
  12. We have long memories. We honor figures like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the suffragists. We remember when women lacked the right to vote and were told our voices didn’t matter—and we won’t forget.
  13. Our voices resonate, and our votes amplify our message.
  14. Our bodies are ours alone. They belong to us—not to any celebrity or authority. We dictate what happens to them, thank you very much.
  15. We get things done. The 19th Amendment has only been in effect since 1920, and it took nearly a century for a woman to reach the highest office in our nation. We’re almost there, and nothing can stop us now.

So if you also identify as a “fierce woman,” then get out there and vote! This is our moment to assert control over our bodies and reproductive health. This is our year to challenge the patriarchy and to potentially crown our first female president.
