How to Keep Kids Engaged: Put Them to Work

What parent hasn’t dealt with the all-too-familiar lament of a child whining, “I’m boooooored”? My 4-year-old has recently adopted this phrase as if it were a national anthem — meanwhile, I’m over here scrubbing the bathroom floor, hardly living it up with my cleaning supplies.

I’ve tried guiding her to toys, engaging her with dress-up from my closet, and even resorting to screen time, but nothing seemed to alleviate her “boredom.” Tired of the constant moaning, I put together a list of activities that can help keep kids entertained and, as a bonus, make use of their energy. Lucky for you, I’m sharing it.

  1. Grab a Broom, Kiddo.
Time to sweep! Get to mopping and wiping down surfaces. Here’s a rag; let’s see how well you can dust. They might make a mess, but hey, it’s better than hearing “I’m bored” again.
  2. Laundry Time!
I’m not a stickler for sorting laundry, but if my kids think it’s fun, why not let them sort by color? Great job! Now, let’s sort by type! Who knows, they might invent their own system. After all, it’s all going to end up in the wash again anyway.
  3. Sock Matching Madness.
Turn a tedious chore into a game! We have a mountain of character socks with no matches in sight. Make it a contest: who can find the most matches? Once they’re busy, you can sit back and relax.
  4. Tackle the Tupperware Drawer.
Everyone needs to learn that organizing Tupperware is an exercise in futility. Let them experience the chaos of this task while you enjoy some well-deserved peace and quiet.
  5. Couch Cushion Cleanup.
Most of the debris under the couch belongs to the little ones, so let them clean it up. Sure, they might find a few stale snacks, but at least they won’t be bothering you for a bit.
  6. Get the Markers in Order.
The red cap goes on the red marker! Give them paper to test if the markers work. Just hope they don’t have a meltdown when they find out the yellow marker is as dry as my social life.
  7. Wipe Down the Walls.
Kids have a knack for getting sticky stuff all over the walls. Time to teach them: if you touch it, you clean it. This way, they’ll learn consequences while keeping you happy.
  8. Foot Rubs for Mom.
After all that hard work, you deserve some pampering. It’s only fair they pay you back for teaching them not to utter “I’m bored” again.
  9. Toy Organization Challenge.
Encourage them to sort their toys! Put blocks together, gather stuffed animals, or get creative with the organization. Embrace your inner neat freak!
  10. Play the Quiet Game.
This game is fleeting, but I’ve heard legends of children falling asleep while trying to outlast each other. A mom can dream, right?

If they can walk and talk, they can pitch in. This isn’t about breaking any labor laws; it’s about clever parenting. They’ll either learn to entertain themselves or tackle chores I’d rather avoid. It’s a win-win!
