On a scenic drive to the Grand Canyon, a California dad had a harrowing encounter with law enforcement that he’ll never forget. While cruising through Arizona with his 7-year-old daughter, a particularly aggressive police officer pulled him over and allegedly threatened to shoot him—all while pointing his gun at the frightened child. Yes, you read that right.
In a gripping post on his Facebook page, Mike Thompson recounted, “Tonight, I was held at gunpoint by an Arizona highway patrol officer who threatened to shoot me in the back (twice) right in front of my 7-year-old daughter. For a moment, I was convinced he was going to take my life for no good reason. I’m still here, and I need to share my story.”
Thompson was stopped after the officer misinterpreted a DMV report about a rental car that had been flagged as stolen. The officer, clearly not in the mood to take any chances, drew his weapon, ordered Thompson out of the car with his hands raised, and sent Thompson’s daughter into a panic as she watched from the back seat.
As Thompson recalled, “My daughter was terrified, trying to unbuckle herself to roll down the window, and the officer screamed at her not to move while aiming his gun at her!” Adding to the horror, Thompson noted that he was fully cooperating with the officer, hands up and not reaching for anything. “I was absolutely frightened.”
After the incident, which ended with Thompson being cleared and allowed to continue his journey, he reflected on the precarious nature of such encounters. “I’ve heard of police using threats like this as a pretext for unjustified violence, and I thought that might be what was happening to me. We live in a world where anyone can have a gun, and police, responding out of fear, can put innocent lives in jeopardy.”
As a San Francisco native, Thompson pondered his luck during the encounter, surmising that perhaps his appearance—a scrawny 48-year-old man in a Mickey Mouse t-shirt—played a role in why he was still breathing. “If I had looked even slightly more intimidating—perhaps if I were young, black, tattooed, or didn’t speak English—I honestly believe he might have pulled the trigger.”
The incident opened Thompson’s eyes to the reality faced by many marginalized communities. “If you’ve ever been skeptical of claims from movements like Black Lives Matter regarding police violence, I urge you to consider my experience and put yourself in the shoes of others.” With so many daily reports of police shootings, it’s no wonder officers are on high alert. However, it’s tragic that those who are supposed to protect us sometimes endanger the very people they’re sworn to serve.
Ultimately, it’s a shame it took such a terrifying experience for some of us to develop empathy for those who face this kind of victimization consistently—and it’s even worse for those who don’t get to live to tell their stories.
