Kid Swapping: The Ultimate Solution for Busy Parents

A couple of summers ago, while catching up over coffee with two fellow moms, one of them proposed an intriguing idea. “What if we tried a kid swap this summer?” she suggested. “Each of us could take turns watching all the kids one day a week, letting us enjoy two days free of little ones. How does that sound?”

With each of us having three children aged between 3 and 14, it meant we’d be overseeing nine kids at once for just one day a week. The prospect of two entire days without kids was too enticing to resist.

We quickly got to work on our cooperative parenting plan. Before our swap days began, we’d coordinate our schedules—each of us juggling multiple part-time jobs—to determine the best days for our arrangement. Since one mom worked at an office from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the rest of us worked from home, we settled on kid-swapping from 10:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. We packed lunches, snacks, and ensured the kids had water bottles and sunscreen for outdoor play.

At first, we were uncertain about how the kids would react. Would they tire of each other’s company? Would the chaos of managing nine kids overshadow the benefits of our two free days? To our delight, our concerns were unfounded. After two successful summers of swapping, the only change I’d make is to add a 12-passenger van to our arrangements!

Our swap days have taken place in parks, movie theaters, backyards, and pools. The kids engage in games and activities, often splitting into smaller groups or pairs. The older kids help out with the younger ones, creating a fun and supportive environment for everyone.

Having done this for two years now, I genuinely believe that three-way kid swapping is one of the best ideas I’ve encountered. Managing nine kids for half a day isn’t as daunting as it sounds; they all have someone to play with, and most of the time, they’re outside, which means we moms have less hands-on work to do.

Their creativity flourishes as they invent games and activities. Just recently, all but the oldest kids spent hours playing “Spirit Animals” in the entryway. Our board games and card decks have been thoroughly enjoyed, and they even come up with their own versions of hide-and-seek or squatting contests, embracing the unstructured play that’s often missing in kids’ lives today.

Occasionally, we’ll introduce a fun activity like a science experiment or arts and crafts, but we’ve discovered that the kids are more than capable of entertaining themselves. With nine kids, a cupboard full of games, and access to the great outdoors, they have all the ingredients for fun.

On rainy days or when things get a bit chaotic, we might put on a movie or let them play video games for a while. However, most of the time, screens aren’t needed to keep everyone happy. These kid swap days have greatly benefited the kids’ social skills and creativity.

And of course, they’ve been a lifesaver for us moms too! We enjoy two days a week of free childcare, confident that our children are in good hands. Nine hours of uninterrupted work time and a peaceful house, even if just for a short while, is pure bliss.

Cooperative parenting is a wonderful remedy for many challenges—I highly encourage finding two or three other families who are interested in kid swapping and developing a system that works for you. It’s definitely worth the effort! For more tips on parenting and family life, check out our blog.
