In a groundbreaking initiative in Baltimore, the Robert W. Coleman School has replaced traditional detention with a meditation program that is transforming students’ lives. This innovative approach not only fosters a sense of calm but also equips children with essential skills for conflict resolution and emotional regulation. It’s time we consider similar programs in every school, as traditional detentions have rarely proven effective.
Instead of spending time in isolation, students participate in the Holistic Me after-school program, where they engage in yoga, mindfulness, and meditation exercises. This award-winning program also includes academic support and a meal, allowing children to learn valuable techniques for managing their thoughts and emotions. According to the Open Society Institute-Baltimore, which funds the initiative, the program has contributed to a remarkable statistic: Robert W. Coleman has not issued any suspensions in the last two years.
Founder Jamie Carter explains the importance of addressing stress in children, regardless of their backgrounds. “Whether it’s from food insecurity or academic pressure, kids need tools to cope with their challenges,” he states. Jamie, along with his brother, Max Carter, and their friend, Leo Martinez, started Holistic Me after being inspired by their father’s meditation practices.
The program has been running for 15 years and serves over 120 students across 13 schools. Through mindfulness activities, children learn to maintain focus and manage their reactions to negative situations. “It helps me stay calm,” shares six-year-old first-grader Mia Johnson. Leadership opportunities are also integral to the program, with students leading yoga sessions under adult supervision.
Alongside meditation and yoga, participants can explore various activities like dance, art, and even STEM projects. Volunteers are on hand for homework assistance, ensuring that students receive well-rounded support. “We’re equipping them with tools they can use throughout their lives,” Jamie adds. “We teach them that they can always find inner peace, no matter what chaos is happening around them.”
