If you’ve caught the Bravo comedy series Odd Mom Out, you probably wish Jenna Parker could be your mom bestie! Not only is she the face of the show, but she also created it, drawing from her own humorous experiences with the moms in her Upper East Side neighborhood. This week, her new book, Sprinkle Glitter on My Grave: Observations, Rants, and Other Uplifting Thoughts About Life, hits the shelves. We sat down with her to discuss parenting advice, the perks of being in your forties, and how to use your kids as a convenient excuse to skip out on obligations.

What are the silver linings of being around 40?

Jenna: You definitely stop caring as much about what others think. Realizing your own mortality helps you appreciate each day more deeply. Plus, you develop a stronger sense of self, allowing you to navigate life with better instincts.

What guidance would you offer someone expecting her third child?

Jenna: Buckle up and invest in some help! I always thought I could manage everything on my own, but having extra hands made all the difference. Also, it gets crazier with each child, so make sure to carve out some alone time with your partner.

Balancing work and family feels impossible, any tips?

Jenna: Schedule weekends away a couple of times a year to reconnect as a couple—dinner out isn’t enough! Also, little surprises or thoughtful notes can go a long way in keeping the spark alive.

What was your latest “uh-oh” parenting moment?

Jenna: Just a few minutes ago! I found myself yelling at my kids to stop their bickering.

When was the last time you used your child as a way to bow out of something?

Jenna: Just last night! One great thing about being in my forties is I don’t feel obligated to go anywhere I don’t want to. I simply say I’m home with the kids while actually enjoying a night out.

Have you ever been the couple that got uninvited?

Jenna: Absolutely! There have been times when my outspoken views led to us being dropped from events. But honestly, I usually thought it was a blessing in disguise!

What’s the least amount of sleep you can manage?

Jenna: I can function on about eight hours.

What’s the biggest challenge of raising kids in NYC? And what’s the upside?

The downsides include the excessiveness—kids discussing private jets and extravagant parties. However, the upside is using NYC as an extra parent; if you explore all five boroughs and expose your kids to diverse experiences, they’ll grow up worldly and inspired.

Lice or stomach bug—what would you choose?

Jenna: I’d pick lice! It’s annoying, but it’s nothing compared to the pain of stomach issues.

How do you react when your kids say they hate you?

Jenna: I usually brush it off, and later, when they say they love me, I respond with, “Oh, I thought you said you hated me?” It always leads to an apology and a hug.
