26 Qualities I Appreciate in Fellow Parents

Parenting is a unique journey, and each of us navigates it in our own way. Even if our overarching philosophies align, our approaches can be vastly different. Since we’re all distinct individuals raising our own special kids, there’s no perfect manual to follow. Real parenting is about flexibility, creativity, and managing the delightful chaos that our children bring into our lives.

While I understand that everyone has their own style, there are certain attributes I value in other parents that make me feel like we could connect. Here are 26 qualities I look for:

  1. A good sense of humor.
  2. You can laugh about your kids.
  3. You find the funny side of parenting.
  4. You poke fun at your kids (without them knowing).
  5. You might tease them a little, but in a playful way.
  6. You’re not overly worried about screen time or junk food.
  7. You stay calm during parenting challenges.
  8. You recognize that parenting is a bit of a gamble.
  9. You don’t spoil your kids because it makes me feel less guilty when I say no.
  10. You serve drinks at birthday parties.
  11. You offer refreshments during playdates.
  12. You just get that parents need a little something to unwind.
  13. You see the joy in family-friendly beer gardens.
  14. You’re not afraid to use a little colorful language.
  15. You believe in vaccinations.
  16. You’re on the right side of history (hint: no to certain politicians).
  17. You’re non-judgmental.
  18. You don’t feel the need to give unsolicited parenting advice.
  19. You understand that sometimes saying “yes” is a win for everyone.
  20. Your kids definitely don’t watch Caillou.
  21. But they can enjoy Star Wars.
  22. You get why my car is a disaster.
  23. You understand why my living room looks like a tornado hit it.
  24. Your vehicle is probably cluttered too.
  25. Your home is a bit of a mess.
  26. You’re perfectly okay with it.

Of course, not having all of these traits doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. But when I find these qualities in other parents, it certainly makes bonding easier!
