Blogger launches a movement for kindness after facing harassment from women over her dress choice.
Recently, a fitness blogger faced some outrageous body-shaming, prompting her to share her experience with her Instagram followers. It’s a disheartening reminder that the cruelty women can show toward one another doesn’t end in junior high.
Fitness coach, Emma Lawson, posted a picture of herself in a stylish mini-dress she wore to a wedding. Her caption detailed the unpleasant reactions she received, and spoiler alert: it wasn’t pretty. She wrote, “If only I had known that wearing this dress on a 90-degree day would make so many women outright rude to me, even coming up from behind to slap my butt while I was standing alone. Apparently, it was ‘a dare’ from her friends because I was a target.”
Um, what?! A target? So, looking fabulous in a dress that isn’t a sack makes one a target? Good to know. Lawson sarcastically added, “Just one of the many acts of kindness of the night! Yup, that happened. Good thing I have thick skin, a sense of humor, and supportive friends and my husband by my side.” She included the hashtag #adultsarebulliestoo, which seems to be tragically accurate.
Let’s be clear: nothing a woman wears makes her a target for anyone. This kind of body-shaming perpetuates a culture of disrespect. Just because Lawson chose a chic, short dress doesn’t mean her body is open for unwelcome touches. That notion is simply unacceptable, and those women should feel ashamed.
Moreover, considering it was 90 degrees that day, I completely understand her choice of attire. Was her only offense looking stunning in that dress? Because, hello, she does! The dress may be form-fitting, but it covers all the right places. Have these women never seen someone wear a short dress to a summer wedding? Apparently, it’s too much for some envious individuals to handle.
Fortunately, Lawson maintained a positive outlook on the ordeal and decided to channel her negative experience into something uplifting. She initiated the hashtag #EmmaKindness, encouraging other women to share their acts of kindness towards one another.
“I’m starting my own kindness movement #EmmaKindness! Whether it’s just me or others want to join in, I’m committing to doing good things for other women daily from now on. I hope to inspire others to do the same, just like I have with my fitness journey.”
She explains that acts of kindness can be as simple as complimenting another woman, buying her coffee, or reaching out to someone who’s feeling down or bullied. The mission is to “combat mean girls with kindness,” and in this age of social media bullying, it’s a much-needed cause.
No woman should face bullying or harassment for her clothing choices, even if they are deemed “inappropriate” (which Lawson’s dress certainly wasn’t). Can we just be nice? It’s essential that we support each other instead of tearing one another down, especially when we’re already facing enough challenges from the outside world. We need to set a positive example for the younger generation, who are observing our every action and listening to our comments.
As Lawson states, “We live in a world that needs more women ready to stand up for a good cause! Who’s with me?” Count me in!
