I’ll be honest: I’m feeling a mix of excitement and nerves about transitioning from a mom of one to a mom of two. My son, Liam, is 7 years old, and for the past seven years, it’s been just the three of us—my husband, Liam, and me. While we’re thrilled about the arrival of his little sister, I know this change will come with its own set of challenges. As we prepare for this new chapter, I’ve identified five important things I want to do:
1. Prioritize Family and One-on-One Time with Liam.
Since we broke the news to Liam about becoming a big brother, we’ve made it a point to spend quality family time together, along with special one-on-one moments. It’s been wonderful for all of us! We want Liam to understand that even with a new baby in the house, he’ll always have our attention and love.
2. Indulge in Some Me-Time that Isn’t Baby-Related.
This is crucial for my own well-being. I know that soon, my focus will shift largely to the new baby, so I’m making it a priority to recharge. Taking time for myself now will help me be a more present and engaged mom later.
3. Enjoy a Special Date Night with My Partner.
Like many couples, my husband Alex and I often let date nights slip through the cracks. Recently, we managed to have a lunch date while Liam was at school, and it reminded us how important it is to prioritize our relationship. If I can squeeze in one more memorable evening out, I’ll feel so much better about the transition ahead.
4. Schedule Family Outings for After the Baby Arrives.
I know it might seem a bit crazy to plan so far ahead, but I find comfort in being organized. We’ve started prepping for the new baby, and I want Liam to see that our family unit will continue to thrive. Planning future family activities will give us all something to anticipate together.
5. Get Plenty of Rest.
Pregnancy fatigue has hit me hard, and with my ambitious spirit, I’m pushing myself a bit too much. I need to embrace naps and take things easy while I can, as this will help me be the best mom I can be when the baby arrives.
