Every time we embark on a trip with our six little adventurers, a wave of anxiety washes over me. I often find myself thinking: What have we gotten ourselves into? What were we thinking when we decided to visit the beach, the zoo, Grandma’s house, or Disney? The thought of never wanting to travel again crosses my mind. Yet, we always pack our bags and go.
I do it for the unforgettable moments, like watching my toddlers experience the ocean for the first time. Initially, they’re hesitant, crying and refusing to let their feet touch the wet sand, but soon enough, they find their courage, laughing as they feel the sand shift beneath them. These first experiences—whether at the beach, in the mountains, or anywhere else—remind me of the world’s wonders, all seen anew through my children’s eyes.
I travel because their laughter, especially when playing with cousins, is utterly contagious. We often visit family, and my kids immerse themselves in creative play, crafting elaborate stories and projects. Hearing their joyful giggles from the other room brings me immense joy, as it gives me precious time to reconnect with my sisters while the kids are happily occupied.
Traveling is also a fantastic way to educate my children about the world. They now know where the Atlantic Ocean is because they splashed in its chilly waters while visiting relatives in New England. They can differentiate between a nickel and a dime after counting their change for souvenir bracelets at the zoo. These hands-on adventures make learning vivid and real. They also learn that people from different places may appear, speak, or act differently, and that diversity is what enriches our world.
I cherish the chance to revisit my favorite childhood destinations. Walking down Main Street at Disney World with my kids, I feel the same magic I experienced as a child. Each visit is a reminder that I’m now the parent, sharing these moments with my children as they discover the joy of these places for the first time.
Traveling allows us to break free from the daily grind of chores and responsibilities. The routine of parenting can feel overwhelming, but getting away helps me escape the cycle of laundry and to-do lists. When we’re traveling together, I can fully immerse myself in enjoying time with my family.
What’s remarkable is that my kids tend to remember only the fun moments, not the stress of travel. They excitedly reminisce about our beach trips, the surprise visit to Disney, or the egg-dyeing extravaganza at Grandma’s house. While I may forget some details, their memories are clear and cherished.
Ultimately, I do it because, despite the challenges, the experiences we share are invaluable. No matter how many times I question whether the trip was worth the hassle, by the end, I always conclude that it absolutely was. The packing, the late-night runs to the grocery store, and the long car rides—all of it is worth it. And before I know it, I’m turning to my partner and asking, “So, where to next?”
