Thanksgiving has always held a special place in my heart. The aroma of a perfectly roasted turkey fills the air, while the cheerful decorations—like little handprints made by children—bring warmth to the table. I relish the delicious combination of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and just the right amount of cranberry sauce. And let’s not forget the joy of leftover sandwiches the next day, or indulging in pecan pie for breakfast. Most importantly, it’s a time to reflect on what truly matters: being surrounded by loved ones in a home that I cherish.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that not everyone shares this fortune. This past year has been particularly challenging for many people, and the stories I hear in my community reveal the struggles they face:
“I’m barely scraping by to feed my family. It’s humiliating… I’m so broke I tried to get a food box, but they said I earn too much. All I could do was cry. I have no food. I don’t live lavishly; I work at the local welfare office. I can’t even share with my family how dire things are. Thanksgiving dinner? Forget it—I can’t even buy a loaf of bread.”
The weight of financial stress can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to providing for your family. Thankfully, I’ve never had to worry about putting food on the table, and I’m grateful for that.
I’ve been brainstorming ways to make a difference, even if it’s just for one night. My goal is to ensure that every mom out there can enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner without the burden of financial worries. Imagine being able to prepare a meal for your family, free from the stress of costs, and to gather around a table filled with good food and great company.
According to a report from USA Today, the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for ten people is around $43.47—not a huge sum for those who are fortunate.
If you find yourself needing some assistance this Thanksgiving, please feel free to reach out in the comments (anonymously if you prefer). Just leave your email, and I promise to keep it private. If you have an extra $25 to share, I’d love to hear from you too. My hope is to match two generous donors with moms in need, providing them with $50 gift cards to local grocery stores so they can gather the ingredients for a Thanksgiving feast. Together, we can make this holiday brighter for families who need it most.
Let’s join forces to celebrate Thanksgiving as a community.
