As summer approaches, many families are gearing up for vacation season. For parents, however, a vacation often translates to sleepless nights in a new setting, waking up at 4 a.m. to the sound of a baby. Despite the challenges of traveling with little ones, one dad blogger, James Taylor, wants to remind parents that it’s still a worthwhile experience.
James, the father of a six-month-old named Max, recently took his baby on an overseas trip and shared some hilariously relatable insights. For starters, he discovered that some people are less than enthusiastic about the idea of flying with an infant. “A few folks raised their eyebrows when I mentioned traveling with a six-month-old,” he quips. “‘So, you’re bringing him on vacation?’ Yes. ‘To another country?’ Yes… ‘On a plane??’ At that point, I almost replied, ‘No, my wife and I will be flying, but we figured Max would enjoy a cannonball ride to get there.’”
James reassured everyone that their trip went smoothly, but it didn’t come without its share of comedic moments. For instance, he noted that packing for a week-long getaway with a baby is akin to what an army would take for an invasion. “It’s about the same amount of stuff that was taken to storm Normandy,” he humorously states.
Traveling with a baby also means you might find yourself seated next to a grumpy passenger. “We were hoping for a sweet grandma type who loved kids,” he recalls. “Instead, we ended up next to someone who looked like they had just bitten into a lemon.”
Then there’s the joy of changing diapers in an airplane lavatory. “When airlines boast about having ‘baby changing facilities,’ what they really mean is: ‘a tiny shelf,’” explains James. “Imagine trying to carve a turkey in a phone booth… but make it half the size and add an angry toddler banging on the door every few seconds.”
Once they arrived at their destination, James encountered new obstacles. He joked that getting a baby passport is a “money grab” and likened applying sunscreen on a squirming baby to “trying to wrestle a seal fresh from a spa.” Additionally, keeping a six-month-old from snatching fistfuls of sand or wearing sunglasses and hats is no easy feat.
Despite the humorous struggles, James encourages parents to take the plunge and travel with their babies. “I’ll always remember Max’s joy as he felt sand for the first time, or how he beamed while floating in the pool on an inflatable crocodile,” he shares. “It’s about creating priceless memories, not just for them but for us too.” After all, the days may stretch on, but the years fly by. If you have the time and resources, the memories you create with your little ones are far more valuable than any minor inconveniences along the way.
