Embracing Anticipation in Parenting

When I was a child, I frequently found myself asking my parents if they were looking forward to various events. Whether it was heading to a birthday party at an ice skating rink, visiting relatives, or gearing up for a Girl Scout camping trip, I wanted to know: “Are you excited?” My little heart was always bubbling with enthusiasm, and I assumed my parents shared my feelings.

Without fail, their response was consistent: “Excited? We’re looking forward to it,” they would say. At the time, I found it puzzling that their level of enthusiasm didn’t match mine—how could they be anything less than thrilled about a carnival or a concert? I couldn’t fathom how dull it must feel to grow older. Of course, I never pondered whether they felt the same excitement for their own plans, like trips abroad or other adult events that didn’t quite capture my attention. After all, children are naturally egocentric.

Recently, we took a quick weekend trip to the beach. As I enthusiastically shared all the activities I had planned for the kids—the boardwalk stroll, ice cream treats, games, the pool, and beach fun—my daughter Lily chimed in, asking if I was excited. “Excited?” I paused to reflect. “Not really excited, but I’m looking forward to it.” And indeed, I was.

However, I must admit, I do feel genuine excitement for certain milestones, like the first day of school. It seems I have officially transformed into my parents.
